Spike knew it was probably trite and he was pretty sure Angelus had already done it but that wasn’t going to stop him. It was Valentine’s Day and his darling Dru deserved the world. He had gone through the effort of stealing a paper heart from a shop and tucking a sheet of his poetry into the envelope along with it – praying Angelus wouldn’t find that part of the gift. Dru loved Spike’s words and in private, he still offered them up to the beautiful woman who knew what effulgent really meant. Naturally, in public he mocked such things.
Chocolates would do none of them any good but he had something better in hand. He had taken a box from the same shop as the love note, red velvet and lace, something expensive and lush. He set it on the table before Dru then draped a bouquet of roses across her arms.
She lifted the red blossoms to her nose and sniffed. “Gorgeous. You can smell the hot house and life racing through them.”
“If you say so, pet.” A note of impatience escaped the leash Spike tried to keep on it, but he was like a kid at his birthday party. “Open your box.”
Smiling, Dru set the flowers done then lifted the top to the box. Her eyes widened as she lifted the still warm human heart from inside. “Spike, it’s perfect!”
“Got it from the florist, too.” He grinned.
“I have a gift for you, too,” she said, taking a messy sip from the heart.
“Oh?”
She let a little blood trickle past her lips. “Me.”
A better gift Spike couldn’t ask for.
