so tired I am. Sugar keeps crashing. I ate like a million skittles today as part of my lab then ate 4 chocolate minis at the seminar and my sugar was still only double digits today. Everyone knew i was ill. I mean i looked it in a serious way. If i hadn't kept mainlining sugar who knows what would have happened. why the crash? Dunno.

I got the kitties back. Kanda has coccidiosis and in spite of what Sir Wiki says here humans can in fact contract these (though some you have tobe very ill yourself). Roy probably brought it in from outside. It's usually asymptomatic (and hell most humans will test positive for several of these) but Kanda is pretty sick. At first they couldnt' figure out anything since nothing had happened then he had a bloody stool before i came to get them. While I was waiting Doc, the huge australian shephard flung himself on my feet, all four paws to the sky PET ME. he was a muddy mess. thanks dude. Then Sparky the Pibbie tried to sit on my lap and since she was chasing barn cats she was a bloody mess (that'll teach her), i now have to medicate everyone liquid AND pills.

I had to rush home to get back today for the seminar. I stopped at Subways to get a sandwich which took forever. BUt THANK YOU to the ladies at the Rio Grande Subways. THey saw the kitties in the carrier and gave me scoops of tuna to take home.

I ran back to work to sit thru my friend's lecture on flipping the riboswitch which was a very interesting research seminar on gram positive bacteria T box riboswitch and the in silico research we're doing on campus. Naturally the only people asking questions were me and L. I'm pretty sure he lost the students. hell he lost me for parts of it. then again my sugar was going boom.

now i want to curl up and cry but hey hey now, i FINISHED all 13 Springkinks (that's right FINISHED) THANK YOU wonderful and varied betas. And I'm on the pivotal scene of my FMA big bang so I might get this done too.

Why is your sugar so out of whack? Hope you keep food handy tonight so that you're not caught in a crash without something nearby.

Yay to finishing all your springkinks!

I'm glad you know what's wrong with the boys. Hope they start getting better now that they're on meds!

I love the barn, as you knew I would.

It should also be noted that they seem to carry the "bug" (for lack of a better description...hey my brain is on ugh shut down mode tonight) in their intestines and develop a natural immunity to it...unless their immune system is compromised in some way. STRESS can trigger the development of the thing as well. Gee no stress amongst the cats lately...*snort*. I found it interesting to learn that it can be carried around by cockroaches and flies, then dropped off oh so conveniently to infect the dog or cat. I'm also of the opinion that Soul was the carrier of it.

another good reason to not adopt strays into the household.

OH I love that barn!!! Would be fun to explore it.

Yes but it could have been Soul as well. Roy is just going to have to learn to be an inside cat...or else. Time to put your foot down hon. I know I know...it IS hard to do with a cat....I grew up around cats so I got to see first hand how stubborn they can be. And how a pitiful meow can make your heart melt.

Glad you found out what it is and that it's treatable, but I do *not* envy you dosing three unhappy cats.

I hope your sugar levels out so that you can get some rest tonight.

Poor kitties. I hope they actually TAKE their medication (instead of like Silhouette, who either scorns the food I put it in or throws it back up).

Nifty barn. Amazing how many people have been in the world...

Toxoplasma gondii is a coccidia species. Cat boxes are the leading vectors for the illness. (Cats are the main host.) This is why pregnant women are not to clean litter boxes.

Yay, Subway!

I would like to have attended the lecture.

noo! I hope Kanda feels better soon! And I hope your sugar stabilizes!!! That's terrible! I'm glad you've been able to keep eating sugar, but that shouldn't be happening! D:

Congrats on finishing all of those springkinks!! At least that's a load off! What an accomplishment!

yes indeed. in fact most humans test positive for T gondi by the time they're 5. that's what I told the cats. they should have waited til next semester so i could hve used this in my parsitology class.

the lecture was tons of high level biochemistry and genetics that I was occasionally going huh over.

whee donut

What is this, a coccidosis epidemic among our pets? I just lost a bird from it, and now Kanda is pooping blood because of it. Then again, Psyche had something else wrong with her that allowed the coccidosis to make her sick, but Kanda seemed like such a healthy fellow.

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
Kanda has allergies so I'm betting his immune system is wonky. I know he doesn't have kitty aids.

My guts are gettng grumpy so i'm wondering if this is a nasty subtype of coccidosis and how long I can stand the side effects if it makes me lose weight then i realize I've gone around the bend and am one step from being those people who buy tapeworms on line

Date: 2011-02-24 01:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] silvrethorn.livejournal.com
Oh, well, my dad didn't care for the constant peeing, but his 20-pound weight loss due to ridiculously high blood sugar got him all excited and proud. It's a good thing he doesn't know about online tapeworms or he'd be ordering them right along with you. Hopefully you won't have to resort to such drastic remedies, especially when the weather gets better and you can get out more.

Isn't coccidosis fairly easy to treat with sulfa drugs? Of course, my grandmother lost her hearing to a bad reaction to sulfa, so I'm leery of the stuff. Bloody diarrhea as a weight loss method doesn't sound much better, though. Hmm. Tough decision.

oh geez. my diabetes only makes me fatter.

right now the only exercise open to me is swimming which i'm NOT allowed to do until after shoulder surgery. gah. I want a Wii or a PS Kinnect.

i'm not remembering what you use for coccidosis. i've been on sulfa many times. if you don't drink the water the way they tell you to, you will thik your kidneys DIED.

still maybe just a little diarrhea...
