She first got under his skin when he was still barely old enough to know what to do with a girl. His twelve year old self had grown up with his Aunt’s ‘girls,’ and had been sorely disappointed that his new master had a daughter. He’d been hoping for a boy his age, not another dumb girl. By the time he left, Hawkeye’s household, Riza swam in his veins, but he was too foolish to let her know how he felt. They were both so young.

It tore his heart having her as his shield in that horrible war, knowing he was the reason she was there in the first place. At the time, he barely understood why she had done it. Afterward, she became his mirror where he checked his humanity daily. Her reflection kept them both on good paths.

Over the years, they both understood they were each other’s addiction, their one great love. Her tears thinking Lust killed him, his impotent rage as her throat was cut, were signs of a painful withdrawal should one lose the other.

Even now, in their stolen moments together, Roy wanted to touch her as much as he could, unable to get enough of her. Very soon, they would no longer have to hide their addiction. Names scribbled on the register, friends in attendance, they would admit openly there was no cure except to be together. Roy couldn’t wait for that day.

This is such the definition of short and sweet. Afterward, she became his mirror where he checked his humanity daily. That was my favorite line - great image.
