2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows
got it from
ashes1753 who gave me the letter S
Spock – My first fandom love. I love Spock to this day. He was so laconic and intelligent and those pointy ears drove me crazy, even as a little kid. I wanted to be on the Starship Enterprise so bad I tried to make a version of it in a tree. Other kids had treehouses, I had the freaking Starship Enterprise.
Sulu – (okay it’s his last name but it’s pretty much the only one he went by). I adored Sulu as much as I adored Spock and bonus: I thought he was cute as hell. Even as a kid, I was attracted to Asian men and that has not changed. Sulu had style. He freaking swashbuckled (and George Takei is one of the few celebs I follow on FB/Twitter. He has such style in real life)
Spike – I admit it, he’s what kept me watching Buffy in the beginning (it was a rough time of my life and I actually didn’t like the show. It wasn’t until it reran that I started to truly appreciate it for what it was). I loved evil!Spike. He was cool, funny and well EVIL. Chipped!Spike was interesting if for no other reason than his relationship with Dawn which I really found fascinating. Souled!Spike of season 6-7 and Angel S4 sucked and not in a good way.
Scully – (again with the last names). She rocks. She felt real in ways many women of action do not. I could believe her as an FBI. She was intelligent and funny and a perfect foil for Mulder. Okay, her disbelief in the paranormal/alien life forms got a little old but still, Scully rocks.
Son Goku (and still with last names) I included him because he was one I normally wouldn’t like. I don’t like the loud, dumb brash boy trope but Goku has this amazing innocence, that in spite of the world around him, that barely tarnishes. He is sweet and caring and sucked me in, in spite of myself.
Near misses: Sherlock Holmes, Abby Scuitto, Han Solo and Strider (but only because I was only allowed five and I couldn’t choose between Spock and Sulu and wanted at least one woman and one manga character represented). Oddly enough almost none of my new fandoms are represented. Apparently not too many S names in manga.

Date: 2012-02-26 11:46 pm (UTC)1. Riza Hawkeye (FMA). Like Xander in Buffy and Sokka in Avatar: the Last Airbender, Riza is the "normal" character in a group of magical (or at least supernatural) allies. Of course, she's a crack shot, but the fact that she enters so many situations with such confidence. Not only that, she provides the emotional anchor to Roy on so many levels, not to mention moral compass. She's just a fascinating character who I haven't dealt with much in my own writing within the fandom.
2. Kit Rodriguez (Young Wizard). From the early chapters of So You Want to Be A Wizards, Kit is a good friend and solid partner for Nita. He is such a wonderfully developed character even though with the exception the segments with Dairine in High Wizardry, the first five books are all told through Nita's POV. I was worried at first when he got to see his POV in A Wizard Alone that he'd somehow lose that special aspect of himself that I'd liked, but it worked out.
3. Rose Tyler (Doctor Who). I had not seen any Doctor Who prior to the current run, so Rose was the first companion I met, so she has a special place with me and by which I have compared everyone else who followed. Since I had no prior experience with the show, I got to explore the wonders of traveling with the Doctor alongside her.
4. Remus Lupin (Harry Potter). My favorite of the revolving Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers. I really like how his character evolved over the course of the books, being there as the adult who didn't talk down to Harry. Of course, he and Tonks were my favorite secondary character pairings in the series.
5. Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy). Even though Harrison Ford was a bit old to be playing the character at the time, he remains how I visualize Jack. (It doesn't hurt that I've always included Air Force One as a semi-cannonical installment in the series, considering Jack eventually becomes president in the books. I read a lot when I was younger, but Clancy's books were by far the longest at the time. Although Clancy's last couple (which have focused mostly on Jack Jr.) haven't been nearly as good as his earlier works, I keep reading them for the Jack Sr. chapters.
Runners-up: The Riddler, Robin, Richard Alpert.
