I'm moving weight off til mondays since there's a more reliable scale in the gym than there is in this house. Also I REALLY need to make that dentist appt. not only is that one tooth sort of broken again my jaw has been out of line since Nov. The muscles spasmed so much this morning it woke me up.

So I went out in the snow (yes, snow, yesterday was nearly 60..) such as it was and visited the last house that I could afford that doesn't have fuel oil/liquid propane as heat sources (you want unaffordable? THAT, omg those are insane. I would rather have an eletric heat pump).

The old pile on church street. http://www.appalachiarealty.com/listings/ListingDetail.php?EntryNumber=1955

It’s actually better than anticipated land wise. It’s on an island (still need to find out if that’s a typo on the taxes. it’s way out of proportion.) Betting it’s trashed inside. Why are there no windows on the sides? Oh right, shotgun house and I’m betting it’s older than 1903, this looks more early 1800’s and there are a few others around dating to about 1810. But I STILL don't think I want to live in town (but it might be unavoidable because of the LP/Fuel oil issue)

Photobucket coming up to it

Photobucket face on, the porch HAS to go, seriously, it’s crumbling but that isn’t that bad of a fix

Photobucket do I get all this land? Is that my garage? Do I GET a garage? No I don't think I do. Hey? is this house totally uneven or is it my imaginaion?

The mint green abomination.
http://www.appalachiarealty.com/listings/ListingDetail.php?EntryNumber=1982

It’s close to its neighbors and the neighborhood is older but not as cruddy as many in Jackson. It’s small. Maybe too small. Is it wrong that I like the hideous green vinyl???

Photobucket neighbor to the left

Photobucket face on

It’s a glorious old pile in Oak Hill but I’m sorry I went to see it. I want it but I KNOW that it is beyond my skills and pocket book to restore. I may still go see it anyhow. Maybe it’s not as bad as I fear (who are we kidding. I just wanna see inside. It had to be wonderful once but I see the bucket under that part where the ceiling came down inside)

Photobucket coming up to it

Photobucket face on

Photobucket oh no look at the wood

Photobucket TEARS (also tears because it’s across the street from a teen center. That alone is a deal breaker)

Photobucket 3 car mausoleum

This is wellston (where everyone tells me not to live, seriously in 6 years here no one has ever said 'go to wellston' no they say wellston sucks) looking back at this I’m almost 100% my GPS took me to the wrong place which is good because where it did take me was out of the question.

http://www.appalachiarealty.com/listings/ListingDetail.php?EntryNumber=1781

no pictures since what I took can’t be this place which is flat and on the road and what I saw was up a rutted hill where people who utter things like ‘ya got a purty mouth’ live.

You know, the green is kind of cheerful and it's low on upkeep.

Those other ones should just have MONEY PIT spraypainted on them. Run, do not walk, away from those.

Keep looking, it's like dating - you have to look to find the right one.

there is no right one here. I should very well just pack up and move. I don't want to live in town but everything outside of town is liquid propane. I'm prepared for the money pit since almost all of them are

eta - I wish I could find something I both like and can afford but here it's either trailers, very old homes like these or modular homes that are selling for nearly a quarter million (and I have NO idea who they think can afford that here). I'm sure once I call the realtors instead of just looking at the websites I might do better but I wanted to see what I could see BEFORE wasting their time.

now could i be happy in a 1950's post WWII track house in mint green with my neighbors up my butt?

Coming from London, where house prices are insane, I just can't get my head around a beautiful old 6-7 bedroom house for that price. O_o Old houses can be money pits, like mustangsally says, and those two look a little crumbly. Although they're gorgeous. Could you find something smaller but in better condition maybe?

Huh, the green one looks like it's about the size of your average inner city house here - around 10-12 hundred square feet?

From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
I love the green one. I'd paint our house that color green if [livejournal.com profile] rahirah would let me. And it sure looks big enough to me. Our house is 950 square feet, WITH the addition.

A shame it would cost so much to restore the Oak Hill pile -- it's truly a gorgeous house (or was, once).

That Church street house has really pretty lines, but yes, does appear to be listing. Might want to get a foundation check! And of course, what's inside? But that's an amazing price.

That first one looks like it was amazing once upon a time. And too bad the once across the teen center is such a mess. That house had a lot of character.

Ah. Why would anyone paint their whole house in that color?!? :o

With a bit of work, the first one could be pretty. Is the facade bricks or has it been painting over (and has aged badly?)

I kind of share Bob Fish's feeling. How many rooms do you actually need?

I'm actually really digging the green one. I can see your hesitation regarding the neighbor issue, though here in New Orleans, the houses are all so damned close together I'm thinking "Wow! There's space btwn the houses!"

The one across from the teen center is a crying shame. It looks like it was truly majestic at one point in time.

And the leaning thing - all your pictures are a little leany, but that one looks SUPER leany! I'd definitely get a foundation check on that one if you're considering it.

Fix the tooth! Yipes. Get your jaw back in alignment. At least mine doesn't stick permanently.

My jaw has gone in and out of place on the right side since a Grape Nut-related incident in my twenties. Fortunately, if it sticks I can easily put it back in place. That pretty much only happens at night when I'm wearing my CPAP.

I keep forgetting to call the dentist because i'm a dumbass.

out of these? it's the most likely as one is falling down and the other has a roof that's falling in. but yeah it's too small. It barely has more room than my apt so what would be the point

I'm a country girl. I grew up with acres around me and I like it that way but here to get that means using liquid propane for energy and I've been there done that and I cost me about 500$/month and I can not afford that AND the house.

The green one has its charms. The one across from the teen center...you know it's so cheap that I could probably double the cost and fix it and my dad would have helped had this been a decade ago but he's too old.

I'm leaning out the car window hence the leany but that one super leany one, no, that IS what it's like. It's definitely got issues that are beyond my ability to fix

It's vinyl. someone made vinyl siding in that color

Painted brick. The problem with that one is the foundation. It is truly bad.

oh you'd be amazed. I currently have books in three separate houses and have been giving them away like there's no tomorrow. I'm a hoarder

i think that first one was a rental until recently. I bet it's a mess

seriously if this were a decade ago, I'd get my contractor cousins out here and we would fix that one across from the teen center. we're all just too old for a job that big

not if the dogs don't like kitties and/or the foundation/roof collapses (depnding on which pile you're looking at)

the house is definitely listing and I think it was a rental so I'm betting the inside is torn up but it might be worth a visit just to see the inside even though I know i'm wasting everyone's time

my apt is about the size of the green house. it's more the neighbors up the ass that bother me.

you know you could seriously just double the price they're asking and fix that thing and it would still be less than my brother paid for his place before the housing crash

I guess you are, if you need THREE houses to fit all of your books! Though when all those little guys will be under the same roof, I bet it's gonna look and feel fantastic!

What kind of books do you own the most?

Most of these houses are pretty cool, but I have to admit that the green one is cheery, and probably bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside if the cottage homes in my neighborhood are any indication.

There are lots of places this big outside the very centre of London (where mostly people don't live anyway - it's a different culture that way to Manhattan). I rented a crumbling 5 bed place (with four roommates) when I was a grad student. But they sell for extraordinary amounts of money? That house in Hampstead would I'm sure go for £1 million plus, even sorely in need of major renovation work. <-- this is why I don't live in Hampstead and don't have a seven bedroom place

None of those make me want to stand up and scream "BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!" based on your descriptions. The green one could be do-able, if it was well-cared for and in the right neighborhood, but it sounds like it's definitely not the latter -- and being in a bad neighborhood can make even the best house a misery (been there, done that. Twice.)

Keep looking, you'll know the right one when you see it. It took us a while -- and one of the things I started to realize after a while (and my realtor admitted) is that there is no such thing as "The Perfect House" - you find the one that is as close as you can get, and fill in the rest once it's yours. You just have to make sure you don't get one with things you don't like (like a bad neighborhood) that you can't control. If you ever have doubts about the location, libraries usually have books of crime statistics you can look at, by census tract - at least we do around here.

it's not a horrible neighborhood for the green house, lamentably 2 houses I didn't show that were very nice old homes were in neighborhoods you wouldn't catch me dead in (oh wait that MIGHT be what happens if i live there)

yep, i plan on doing that kind of homework. thanks

it's the same size as my apt. the sq footage is included in the realtor's page I believe.

I might still be worth looking at. I know it sounds crazy, but my HOUSE had more square feet than my apartment. 835 vs ~728, if you took off the tiny third bedroom of 8x10 (80sf) the house only had about 20 sf more space. However, we felt like we were in a much smaller space because of how the rooms were arranged. There was far less usable space in the house than in the apartment.

So anyway, it might be worth looking to see how the rooms are arranged. Added benefits of having a back yard, front yard etc. You never know till you go. Can't hurt anything, right?

Edited for "can't type crap".
