TV ramblings
Jan. 12th, 2005 11:26 pmI was very pissed at how they handled Serena's departure on Law & Order Cut for spoilers Okay I've seen every L&O or so I thought. I do not remember her being gay. I have this feeling I might have been upset about it coming out of the blue once before but they rarely if ever give us that kind of info. If they did and I forgot please tell me when and in what context we learned her sexuality since I think it might have cropped up.
That aside, I've been hating what they were doing with her. SHe's been fighting with everyone all season. I could tell she was going even before I read she was from that since it was so OOC. But to fire her was cold but then again it's something they've never done before. Now this is where her sexuality comes in. Now, I could give a toss if she's gay. Fine and dandy but it felt like something they trotted out for show. "Did you fire me because I'm gay?" he just spent 5 minutes telling you why he fired you but I understand the fear that your sexuality is the real reason only she's had NO sexuality for 4 years. It didn't feel natural. It felt very tacked on to rile up the audience and THAT'S what bothered me. End of rant
Now on to Medium. I'll be honest even though I've written stories like this a lot and I love psychic detective work, this didn't grab me even before it aired. So why did I watch it? I only get NBC in WI and that's the station it's on. It'll give me a computer break for an hour. Only I hate it and I have no idea why critics are raving. SPoiler cut The acting totally sucks. Patricia Arquette is an obnoxious bitch in this. She has all the feeling of a stone and has no connection emotionally to her family that I can feel. Okay I missed the second of the three because I forgot the 'bonus' episode on Thursday. But in #1 (which made me feel embarrassed for Texans. It made them look that bad. Um does anyone believe they'd roll out about a half dozen Texas Rangers to pick up one pyschic from the air port?) her husband is twisting her arm to do this and her boss at the end says I want you to be a jury consultant. I don't know what I missed in #2 but #3 has her husband embarrassed by her and making up lies as to what she does for a living for his friends (maybe he's embarrassed she quit law school at the very end and stuck the family with a 150,000$ in student loans or why no one thinks to say 'jury consultant' which she is and IS a real job), She suddenly thinks she can not be wrong and her boss seems to have forgotten he knows about her powers and that he wants her working for him. I hope #4 is better because there won't be a #5 for me if it's not.

Date: 2005-01-13 04:47 am (UTC)In spite of all this, however, there is something about the show that I really like. I have every intention of continuing to watch. Go figure. *shrugs*

Date: 2005-01-13 05:16 am (UTC)I turned it off and surfed away to another channel. Meh.
And...L&O? She lasted longer than any other ADA character; they had to find some way to fire her. Problem? In New York State, you can't fire someone because they're gay. In fact, the episode? gay - in the pejorative. I preferred Project Runway.

Date: 2005-01-13 05:36 am (UTC)As for L&0, I think Jill Hennessy character lasted longer but I could be wrong. The whole episode rankled but that line really did mostly because she was never really brought out as a gay character. If she had been, I would have been fine with her asking the question but otherwise it was just WTF?

Date: 2005-01-13 05:50 am (UTC)And I feel the same way. What the fuck was with the "Is it because I'm a lesbian" WHAT?! How random is that! Like you just said, he just TOLD you're too passionate and emotional to be a prosecutor. And it makes no sense, she's been there for 4 years, to fire her just like that , just FOR that?! He said so himself, "You're a superb lawyer". There was no indication whatsoever that she was a lesbian or straight. Does it even matter?! What was the point. The show hardly deals with what goes on in their personal lives, I haven't watched lately because I've gotten tired of the 50 bajillion Law and Orders out there.
And about Medium, I was never particularly fond of Patricia Arquette. Her acting...was...meh. Her waking up from like the SCARIEST DREAMS EVER, you'd think she's have some sort of reaction other than just waking up.
Though the husband, I liked him, I've seen him before and he always comes off as weird and creepy, but I didn't get that vibe off of him. Funny that. Um..why DIDN'T she say she works for the DA, she's an intern, ANYTHING that would have made sense. Like when people asked her what she did for a living she was really going to say "I see dead people" and then crawl under the table. Riight.
Overall I think the show is good, not great, albeit NOT very original. I don't think it's anything special certainly not anything to rave about. Also the end of the one...uh..with the necrophiliac...what the hell?! When she sees the guys face on the menu, it was like an "Aw shucks" moment. What the hell?! That's DANGEROUS, thinking for CERTAIN that said person was the murderer and he wasn't?! If she can mix up things like that, just simply by seeing a stupid menu once, how does that bode well for her? How can she trust herself and in what she sees and claims to "know"
There are a LOT of things that need to be fixed up.
Meanwhile, I'll watch good tv by watching reruns of BTVS S1-5

Date: 2005-01-13 06:02 am (UTC)And yes everything you just pointed out bothered me about Medium too. I know her husband from the 80's. He used to be in lots of things as a bit actor but I'll be damned if I can remember his name.

Date: 2005-01-13 11:55 pm (UTC)I watched Medium last week because it was on after something I was watching and was pretty bored (enough to watch it, and with the show itself). I agree that the acting was awful. I don't plan on watching it again.

Date: 2005-01-14 04:23 am (UTC)It was NOT a good L&O it really wasn't. I'll probably end up watching Medium simply to get a break from the computer back in WI (NBC is all I get)
