I went to the Mothman Festival with [livejournal.com profile] rain_oubliette who drove down for it. I've been before as most of you know and Rain had relatives here but hasn't really been to the festival.

Wow, poor Point Pleasant is even more depressed and ghost towny than ever before. I hate that. I hate that the haunted Lowe hotel could go belly up because frankly it's a little scary there with nothing else still functioning (This whole area suffers from too little educated and a persistence of belief that it is 1950 where you can drop out of school at 15 and get a job. I have families actively sabatoging their relatives because education ain't the Appalachian way... and I wish I were kidding about that).

But the festival was fun. Somehow Rain and I forgot to get mothman pancakes. I like them because the money goes to Fischer house which provides a place for the families of veterans to stay while their relative is at a VA hospital long term. That's important to me (but apparently not so important as to go and donate)

I took Rain into the haunted Lowe (and some ghost hunters were moving their equipment into it). And we were menanced by Men in Black and the actual Mothman put in an appearance. See? Photobucket We barely escaped :-)

We hid out in the mothman museum for a while before going to the State Theatre where the talks all happen but sadly this time it was conspiracy theories which doesn't really interest either of us. Mostly I wanted her to see the theatre. Smells like mildew has harlequin patterned leather/naughyde...whatever on the walls).

After that we went into the Mason Jar, an antique store (one of the few things that seems to do okay there). I told Rain 'DO NOT let me buy glass or a tea pot.' She assured me she would not.
I so totally did not buy this Photobucket

Nope not at all. It was only 6 bucks then was on sale for 25% off so I paid four bucks for him. It's merely stamped 'Japan' on the bottom. I doubt he's worth more than the 4$ I paid but I think he's neat.

We then hit the vendors. hard. They were SO happy to see us. We got to speak to Rosemary Ellen Guiley which I always enjoy doing. I got her to autography her book with George Noony Talking to the Dead for my brother for the holidays and her book on the Djinn for me. Also, major impulse buy for me Alchemy Tarot As some of you know I've studying alchemy and it's art since the 80s. It was actually cheaper from her than it is here at amazon. The art is amazing. I need to go fix up the cards before using it but this looks like a promising deck. I didn't buy from this vendor but really wanted to Seriously Sick Socks (and is wondering could I do this for less than the asking price...) I did get a history/ghost history book on the Moundsville prison and some YA paranormal that's set in Gallipolis. I didn't even read the back since I wanted to support a local author and it turns out it's a dark take on the tooth fairy...okay then.

Rain and I also went to two cemeteries after hitting Tuscany Cuccina for lunch. One cemetery I have never heard of, Mound Hill cemetery. It had a dirt road going straight up the side of a damn hill and barely any room to pull over. It had a few interesting graves and the most amazing view of the Ohio River. I think that cemetery had to come before any real wealth in the area. I can see why no farmer would want it but to have such a commanding view? Maybe it was too much for carriages but if a hearst made it up there...I'm shocked it's a cemetery.

And I took Rain to Pine Street which is an old cemetery I've featured here before. It has some interesting things too and it is as flat and as low as Mound HIll is high.
Photobucket I spotted this one (which i missed the last time I was in there). I said 'what's that?' Rain didn't know. I said 'looks like a dead baby on top of tombstone.' We dismiss that. Um it's TWO dead babies...okay then.

And just now I heard this rustling behind me and I turn to see Kanda pulling shit out of the closet. I ask him what he thinks he's doing and he's got both front paws spread wide (for maxmium damage) and panics but his nails need trimmed again so he's stuck on an lap throw that i had put away and he's trying to escape but can't without dragging this whole blanket with him. He's hobbling away pathetically while i'm trying to help him because he KNOWS he was doing something bad.

That is a totally awesome mug.

Ooo, a Djinn book? Score.

Sounds like that place was a lot of fun.

And -_- and the whole 'we don' need no education' bit.

I am ashamed that I am a West Virginian, and I have never been to this festival. I just never think about Mothman. LOL

But it does look like dorky fun. :-)
