I'm thinking about going Amish

cornerofmadnessI had no finals today so I worked on the one i have to give tomorrow and I decided to start working on transfering files to the new computer and putting up my new DISH reciever. What could go wrong?
Tech issue #1 DISH. They determined my receiver was bad so they sent another. I tried to hook it up. It says it's not authorized. I call tech support. He can't make it work. He sends me to the super duper tech support mega- guru since he has no clue. She walks me through the same steps I did on my own and it STILL won't work. It tries to download the guide. We finally get it to authorize but it st
ill won't download guide. It keeps going back to zero. She gets impatient and sends out a tech to the house and says if it ever starts working call us back. I go put lunch in the oven and sure enough as soon as we're NOT looking at it, it's fine. I call them back
Tech issue #2 HP. I didn't realize nothing was set up on this computer (mom bought it and sent it) so I didn't know I had to get the discs. out. no problem. So the new HP did seem to update fine. I think. Kinda. OMG Windows 8 really is the most unintuitive interface on the planet. WHo the hell thinks to look in the settings (and you have to hover your mouse over a mystical aspect of your screen to even make that pop up) to find the power off stuff? And esc does NOT downsize full screen items. no you have to find the sweet spot to hover over to pop up the desktop escape route. bangs head.
However you couldn't USE anything until you went online and verified it.No problem I have a verizon software copy on my flash and installed it. But then the internet wouldn't work. You guessed it. I have to call verizon AGAIN. The first tech couldn't figure it out so once more I get passed on to the super duper tech support mega guru who looks, can't see anything and asks, did you turn off your computer after downloading the software. Blushes, no I didn't think to do that. Yeah. Now it works.
But for some reason it has the wrong antivirus on it. I need to call Costco and find out what's up with that and if this is the full version of Norton. If so I might leave it. If not I have to figure out where in the hell I put the Kaspersky cd
So Amish? Maybe.
And it's been a rough day emotionally because today is my last full day with Soul. TOmorrow I'm gone most of the day. Saturday I take him in. Mom is killing me too at this point. First she's all 'you can't keep that outdoor cat' then she's all 'bring him in.' (I tried today and he took off. Last week he was fine with it, not so much now). THen she's like well you don't have to get rid of Soul, just keep cleaning up (same person who tells me my place HAS to reek and it does) but I can't keep cleaning up (I have no idea what's going on with mom other than between dad and grandma she's losing it). I'm pretty sure he pissed on the couch when I was out. I was telling ELD that I kept smelling piss but couldn't see where but i was on the couch grading and every time I shifted i smelled it and i smell it now so I'm sure it's in my shirt. I'm throwing out that couch anyhow but still. It's disgusting. I'll try to febreeze it but that stuff does squat.
So yeah, sad and frustrated.
In GOOD tech news, that Darth Vader flash drive I bought is hysterical. When you pull off his helmet to expose the usb doodad, it reveals Anakin's messed up scarred face. It comes with tons of icons and stuff but it's all pictures of the series of flash drives....
ETA - kanda wanted to sit with me while i took my own exam to be sure it was right. and he crawled up onto my shoulders but he's NEVER done that before and also he's fat as hell so I was trapped. I couldn't use my arms. I tried to lean forward to work and he slipped behind me and I was laughing too hard to help him up. He finally crawled out all indignant
ETA 2- also couldn't get into eliana's twitter today. It says I have the wrong password. I know it's write but I say fine let's reset it. Every time they send me a reset for the password it says 'we can't verify the person asked for this to be reset' (um yes I did. I gave you my email and I'm clicking from the email you sent) So i go to their help page and as far as I can see if you can't log in to twitter you can not get help. I kept trying and kept saying no this didn't help but if you click the No option it does nothing but ding at you and doesn't move to something more helpful.

I was looking at the new HP Pavilion (basically what I have here, but with a Terabyte hard drive and 8 Gigs of RAM, plus a faster processor), and while I HATE Windows 8, at least all the keys would be attached...

I do live in a very non-tech area. I was stuck behind a horse and buggy the other day (no lie) and Windows 8 is meant for tablets with touch screens. they were idiots to put it on anything else
