Home and another Writerly Ways
Mar. 17th, 2013 10:37 pmIt was a strange drive. You know the weatherman is a lot like my students, right about 50% of the time. Friday it was supposed to snow, it was 60. Yesterday was supposed to rain my entire travel path so I didn't go and it was again, 60. Today it was snowing. Finally, seeing it wasn't sticking and they were calling for ice tomorrow, I said screw it and left. Apparently, it was snowing only over my apartment. It was fine (in spite of Kanda making me drag him out from under the futon, screaming and acting like he might die). BUT I forgot my insulin?!? (I can deal) and I packed the suitcase I was going to give to charity…Um? Also on the way here, I found a credit card in a rest stop. I took it with me and called them to put a hold on it and to call the owner. I knew I wouldn't use it (even if I were driving past the casino) and feared someone else might. In addition, I had to go through Steubenville and was glad I didn't have to go thru the downtown, not after that verdict (which I agreed with mind you). And I'm home less than three hours and dad has already called me fat so…
So what does this have to do with writerly ways? I had four hours in the car to think on my stories. My brain interpreted this as let's come up with a new story idea and not let you think about anything else. Also, let's tell you all the sexy bits (yes, let's do this now and not in the shower or some place more conducive to it than say a car going 70 mph).
This stems, no doubt, from me catching up on Vassalord. You can find it here (I'm normally not for reading scanlations but even though Tokyopop will be back they don't intend to give us the last two volumes of this. Sigh. And I'm no fan of mangafox but they had most of it so in this case I'll cope). It got me thinking about the master vampire/ get relationship. If you haven't read this manga (points to my icon), Johnny (the master) and Charley (his get) have an interesting relationship, coupled with the fact that Charley is highly religious. Well I've done that angle (twice in fact, once in a het UF and my Vampires in Vegas). (oh and Vassalord is worth the read. The art is lovely but it does take a few readings to make heads or tails of some of it. That said Nanae knows her vampire lore and has a handle on basic genetics)
So I thought about other master-get relationships, predominately ones I'm most knowledgeable about, Harris and Whedon. Harris's vampires take it to a level I wouldn't want to use. For example, Bill can't act against his sire (I forget her name), ever. Since this would be m/m erotica, I would feel uncomfortable (even though I have written dub/con more than once) having that as a feature of this story. I think Whedon's approach would be more my style. I love the relationship between Spike/Dru, Angelus/Darla. There is a tie there but not an unbreakable one. Spike and Dru were pretty stunned that Angel killed Darla. On the other hand, Dru took off on Spike and Angel took off on Darla so they weren't as tight as the Harris style vampire.
What I have in my head for this story (no names yet) is that the master is OLD. I'm thinking Beaker people, Neolithic old. He's short and dark either from Wales or Ireland. I do have a Welsh vampire already so maybe he's Irish. (pre-Irish….). His get is Italian. Their paths crossed when he was a tween and his mother burned as a witch. The master sets him up with a glassblowing family in Murano and when he is twentyish he's attacked and his vampire friend finds him in the canal dying and changes him over. They're together for centuries but the get feels like he can not separate from his master and he is losing himself.
What I know of the story is it opens when the vampires are coming out to the world and his master is in a position of power for this. They have not seen each other since the revolutionary war. It's now the 1980's. Yeah, I argued with them but they insisted. In fact, the UNIVERSE insisted. On my drive home by toggling between 96.7 and 96.9 I can listen to the best of the 80's 90s and today. It was ALL 80's. It was a sign.
I know that the master has an enforcer, a Korean/American vampire woman who he rescued as an infant from being killed (or maybe Viet Nam, I'm still looking into the mixed raced babies of that time period). He does hand her off to someone else to raise but kept tabs on her like a favorite uncle (or in her eyes, a second father). I'm not sure how she became a vampire yet.
I know that there is a vampire force that doesn't want to come out and they'll be the villain. Master and get are tossed back together again and the relationship renews. I know the master's blood tastes better than anything else. (also I would like a better word that 'get'. Fledgling works but since the younger vampire is at least six hundred years old that doesn't feel like it would fit this situation).
I know that the younger vampire is back to his glassmaking roots and is making his living as an artist in the field. (Move over Dale Chihuly). At this point his master is a king, senator, however I decide to arrange the vampires and their spokesperson. Also, he's very into the 80's fashion much to his get's chagrin. Bon Jovi hair, the colorful colorful clothing, probably an earring. The get has three TVs, one with an Atari set up on it and the other an intellivsion (and the third is upstairs in the windowed part of the house for company) and he has a Commodore 64 that he loves and plays Zork (because I'm not sure I can write a story without a geek).
So what do you think? (also reposting much of this over to my writing blog too)

gsd_rtfn is open for sign ups today. I find this kind of competition helpful in writing things. I know some of you are doing big bangs so...

Date: 2013-03-18 12:48 pm (UTC)Sort of unrelated but sort of not. If you go with that body type, it isn't uncommon in Boston but seems to be very uncommon here in the Philly area.

Date: 2013-03-19 10:54 am (UTC)Yeah, if he is going to be 1000 plus years old probably not that stocky from our POV.

Date: 2013-03-20 10:30 pm (UTC)I will but it'll only go to his head (and growing up in the 80's is probably why I set in then)

The reactions that "those boys' lives are ruined because of that girl!"... ugh.
NO, their lives are "ruined" because they raped someone.
