I'm not even joking. My grandmother is a psychic vampire, has been my whole life. They had to move her to a new (as in BRAND new) assisted living because the old one was racking up violations. Two days ago she loved it, today she was having a screeching fit about being taken back to the old one. Nothing was right. The cream made her coffee too cold, mom made the coffee too sweet, the nurses here are too young and they do their job instead of hiding in grandma's room talking to her and making her feel like the queen she believes she is. Dealing with her is like dealing with a thousand pound gold belt wrapped around you while you try to swim from Florida to Mexico. Mom is completely unable to do what so many others do, DON'T VISIT. I can no convince her there is no need to go two-three times a week. The argument that Grandma will be furious and belligerent if you go every other week is void on the face of it because she'd do that if you went daily.

I do not want to outlive all joy in life. I do not want to be this much of a burden on people. Then again I wouldn't. I've never been as mean and self centered as she is.

As for the students on the list, believe in yourself. Believe in your abilities. And if you're just not cutting it in core classes, then consider if you're on the right path. Do NOT try to take illegal short cuts. It could kill your dreams dead. Does that hint at how my week's been going?

Also if you're a nurse and you don't know what BUN test stands for, I'm going to ask for a different nurse.

And the allergy thing was even worse today. I reacted to air freshener too. I'm not allergic to those. I have no idea what's up

Oh man, it's always painful to watch someone let themselves be abused like that, out of... some misplaced sense of obligation? Enabling toxic people only makes them more toxic.

yep that's it exactly. She's spent 70 years of her life dealing with grandma

I can sympathize with your mom so much. Although my own mother was in no way as awful as your grandma, she did have the 'nothing you do for me is quite good enough' mentality. It used to infuriate me.

It amazes me how mean and selfish people can be. And you probably remember her when she was younger, so I'm believing you that this isn't a problem of aging for her.

My mother brings this up all the time. At 62 my grandmother stopped working and expecting everyone to do ALL her stuff for her so she could run around all over the world (literally) and for the next 36 years it's getting worse. She had her favorite daughter who died of alcoholism nearly 10 years ago (my god). My mother and her brother exist as servants. Seriously. She doesn't even like them much and tells them that. they should have died, not the favored child.

I have said this before but I truly believe, your grandmother proves the adage that only the good die young. The woman will outlive you, though you will have a long life.

"I do not want to outlive all joy in life"
I second that. When we're both at the edge of this, why don't we do a Thelma and Louise? I've always wanted to see the Grand Canyon.

"Illegal short cuts"
OMFG. Not only will you be thrown out of your current program of choice and school, you might not be allowed in other programs and colleges. That is so sad. I cannot say that I disagree with the student being removed... punishment fits the crime... but it is sad that all the person would have to do is study.

BUN - blood urea nitrogen. How well are your kidneys? I know nurses can't know everything. I give them credit for trying though. If a nurse ISN'T trying, then oh yeah, new nurse please.

Allergic reaction. I reacted to Dad's cancer the first time. Really. Hives, itching, soreness... all due to stress. Honest Injun, as they say in cartoons.

she does

Yes, though make sure our paperwork is in order because I had a friend do this this year for health reasons and it's been a depressing nightmare

exactly. Oh and I forgot it wasn't just BUN they didn't know. I asked what is good cholesterol. My MOM answered it right. My students told me shit like insulin or HCl, (close but no cigar)

Yeah I'm in the middle of something. It's autoimmune, I've had it since 93. There are fibromyalgia symptoms, vasculitis and allergy symptoms. we've never figured out what it is.
