Author’s Note -- written for [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_bakeoff. New anime for me (about halfway in). Not sure I’ll be writing much for it but it had a few things it wished to say.

He was damaged goods, had been since he was five years old. Even among the Enforcers, the dogs of the police force, Kagari is different. Most of them didn’t become latent criminals until they were adults. They had normal childhoods, as normal as they got at any rate, more normal than his, locked away in a mental facility without much in the way of human contact. They did things that teens did. They had fun. They loved. They had jobs all before Sibyl deemed them unsafe to be out in the human population.

Not him. Kagari had been stripped away from his family as a child. He didn’t even know why at first, couldn’t remember what he had done. One would think he’d be able to remember the incident that clouded his hue to the point he was labeled unredeemable. He had no visitors in the mental health establishment. Even the healthcare workers avoided them. He was housed with other kids, many of whom cried because they wanted someone to simply hold them. Kagari hadn’t understood that. In retrospect, that lack of empathy was probably why he had the dog collar wrapped firmly around his wrist.

But Kagari had a new family now, the other hounds. Even Ginoza wasn’t too bad of an Inspector even if he had no measureable sense of humor. No one – well maybe Ginoza – judged him here. Kagari eyed the new inspector, Akana Tsunemori as she tasted the food he had cooked, a talent they encouraged in the mental health establishment as if they could somehow channel his latent criminality. Tsunemori seem too naïve and gentle to be saddled with a monster like him. Still her eyes lit up as she proclaimed how good his cooking was. Maybe she’d fit into this family of misfit toys after all. That made him inexplicably happy.
