As I often suspect
Aug. 8th, 2013 10:45 pmIt's my students reading abilities that are the real issue. I was asked when I interviewed here in 2005 'can you teach illiterate students?' Um I've been teaching a year so I doubt it. They hired me anyhow. When it came to the multiple choice only 3 out of 10 passed (7 out of ten passed once we added in the reading assignment and essays). Several did NOT answer the questions or answered them wrong. Here, this is what I asked.
The red queen was right
Questions on the article (worth .5 pt each)
1 A decreased in this_______________________ is just as important as increased extinction rate in driving extinction
2 A deteriorating environment and better predators forces a species to do this_____________________
The link between global warming and disease spread
1 How is climate warming effecting disease and parasitism? ________________________
2 Where is climate warming happening fastest?_______________________
3 This tropical entity is being harmed by fungi and bacteria_______________________
4. Name one human pathogen that is linked to increasing temperature__________________
and I linked the fat berg thing yesterday 1. What created ‘fatberg’ _________________________
2 What did they do with ‘fatberg’____________________________
Yes...they couldn't read the articles and find the answers.
Did I mention my new insulin is a bitch mother? I actually had to call and ask how to use it because NO WHERE in the instructions did it say turn the knob until the diamonds disappear and you see and arrow then pull out the knob and turn to the unit number. NO WONDER my patients hated insulin so much. This is worse than today's usual insulin where you basically turn the knob and shoot up. You have to roll this in your hand then shake it to mix it, prime it (ie squirt out insulin into the air) several times before it actually goes because it's sort of big particles and it must be cold AND must be thrown out ever 2 weeks whether or not it's used up.
And Kanda, much like with children and their parents there are two ways of getting attention a) by being good and over achieving (like you using your scratching pole for the first time in 4 years instead of my floor) or b) acting out and being bad. Why are you choosing B?
And I did drive to Jackson to get a blizzard since they were donating a dollar to the Miracle Network today. A little one since well lactose intolerance.
and last but not least, HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Date: 2013-08-09 06:15 pm (UTC)My dad always just used needles. But I've seen some of the crazy insulin things these days and they look pretty complicated, at least initially. I'm sure after awhile it'll be old hat for you.
Kanda is plotting to take over the world, didn't you know?
Go you with writing. You inspire me. You seriously do!

Wait, I know where one is. Duh. Never mind. :)
I have to admit that while I read the article on the fatberg, I don't think I could answer those questions because apparently it drained right out of my sieve-like brain...

Date: 2013-08-09 08:19 pm (UTC)hahaha well yes but if you were reading this with the questions in hand at the time, I think you could handle it just fine

Date: 2013-08-10 09:15 pm (UTC)sadly the blackberries I just spent a mint on at the farmer's market aren't as good as hoped but remind me of the ones I used to pick
no subject
Date: 2013-08-10 09:53 pm (UTC)Probably tame blackberries; they don't have the same amount of flavor, but no stickers, so farmers like them.

Date: 2013-08-10 10:05 pm (UTC)yeah probably. it IS a blackberry farm. at least it's not the giant tasteless thing in the grocery store
no subject
Date: 2013-08-10 11:26 pm (UTC)Yeah, probably a wild/tame cultivar, then. The guy I bought my berries from a couple of weeks ago said that's what his were, and they were nice, plump, and not quite tasteless, but not what I remembered from a kid, either.
