It's hard to write sex scenes while you're working on a lecture on reproductive pathology, just saying. EVERYONE gets a complex. No, you do not have Epididymitis but you might get an STD if you don't get in there and get naked, just saying. Oh wait, that might GIVE you the STD. Sigh.

and for no reason other than I'm wasting time entirely today since I'm having high blood sugar issues which impair thinking and my whole ability to give a fuck, have this wonderful little animated fan vid.

So I've been thinking again about author promotion. Like it or not (and honestly I'm in the not category), we have to promote ourselves. It's no longer something publishing houses do except for a select few. As much as I hate to say it, it's how 50 Shades of Grey went from porny fanfic turned 'original' crap to making millions. If I knew how do that, well I'd already be riding that lofty wave.

I ran across this and it made a lot of sense to me (scroll back and find others of her posts as well). Madison Parker’s author promo series This one talks about gravatars. Using LJ as my predominate blog for years, and having so many interchangeable icons, it never occurred to me that other systems have just one avatar and that using the same one many places would allow for brand recognition (like I said, I have little marketing skills so I'm not thrilled with doing my own promotion but darn it, I will try).

I have zero graphics skills as well. It probably wouldn't take much to have a branding avatar for facebook/twitter etc but suggestions would be happily taken.

As would suggestions for an easy to manage, simplistic web page. I know some of you have used weebley and others word press. I'm leaning more to the latter just to use their blogging software as well since it's so wide spread (that'll cut down on some work). Thoughts? Suggestion? I want mostly a place to link out to the blog/Fb/Twitter, a static page with my info and a page where I can do a bibliography/linked out buy now thing. Also, I want it under MY control. I've done the pay someone else to do it thing in the past and it didn't work well for me.

The other thing I can't decide on, and from the looks of things is author page vs regular facebook page. (and now FB is changing how advertising works on their site). I'm not sure which would be better. I know how to do the latter. I'm not sure how much I'd have to learn for the former. It's not me being lazy when I say there is only so much new stuff I want to learn. There is limited time and every moment I spend on this stuff is time I'm not doing something else so I have to use it wisely. SOOOOO, the question is, does anyone out there in LJ land have thoughts about this one way or the other.

My novel is coming out soon (I was hoping by Christmas but I've yet to see an edit and I'm getting nervous and antsy). I would like to have something and someplace people can find me so any strides I take now are very important ones and help would be appreciated.

And for those of you with an independently published ebook, check out this contest, book contest Thanks to ES for this.

What's the thing for the creative people?

I can imagine writing about STDs and stuff might put a damper on writing sex scenes. (I can hear it in my head now, "EWWWW, CONDOM. NO WAIT, CELIBACY FOREVER!")

I use Wordpress both for my romance-writing blog and for my static real-name homepage. I've generally been pretty happy with it, and it's also nice because you can customize it at any level from "I'm not sure what I'm doing so I'll just pick a template and go with it" to "I'm a badass with CSS and I will rock this website like a BOMB".

Running it from your own webspace is DEFINITELY harder and has a steeper learning curve than just getting a Wordpress blog, though. I think if I were starting over today I probably wouldn't bother paying for web hosting (which I'm mostly doing now because I've been doing it for 15 years and my email is there, etc). I would just host my blog/website somewhere like Wordpress.com.

I tried Typepad for a writing blog, but I was totally the suck when it came to design so I couldn't figure out what I was doing or how to drive readers to the site, so I finally gave it up and moved everything to another Live Journal; I don't know if I should try WordPress or if I'm just a rubbish blogger.

You won't be any more rubbish than me. I don't need a fancy site with things zooming around and being all fancy. If they can find/follow my blog and click on story covers to get the buy now info I'll be happy enough (is glad that the 90's midi file stuff has died. Funny, now we all have high speed internet, back then most of us had dial up and thought putting huge sound files on it was a good idea)

thank you that is what I need to know. I have no real desire to run my own site on web hosting because I took one computer class back in 1986. I have NO idea what I'm doing beyond LJ's basic HTML.

I'll have to watch the video when I'm more coherent.

Some of my characters can definitely get behind that. :D

it's something to listen to while you're doing something that doesn't need that much concentration. it's 20 minutes long (the perfect length for a commencement speech, hear that everyone who wants to drone on forever)

snort. NONE of mine can, poor horny things

Thanks for the Neil Gaiman link. I needed that one.

BTW, just looked up "fetus in fetu" because of something I read. Another thing that makes you go "EW!" There were photos. So glad I'm past childbearing age and this isn't even in the cards.

Hmmm, well, maybe later today or tomorrow, then. We'll try to give it a listen, yeah?

A great deal of mine have problems with sex, in one way or another. I'm sure that says something about me. :D

Right now, though, I'm listening/watching Game of Thrones, the first season, and can see why people like it.

*snerk* I have the feeling Sheldon and I would get along quite well, in that respect.

I'm enjoying the show. I don't know if I would like the books, despite [livejournal.com profile] mjules telling me I would.

she told me that too. I found the first book slow moving, misogynistic and took it back BUT I was in a bad frame of mind at the time

Yeah, she warned me about the treatment of women, and I think she told me it got better. At least in the TV series, some of the women start ripping the men to shreds.
