I refuse to put my students thru MORE expense to get every add on these publishers think they need. It's getting ridiculous. I was thrilled to try these new online labs...but they're not part of an online system that is already 110$ (which is bundled into the book BUT if they get an old book that is their purchase price...which is still probably cheaper than buying it new). It's getting ridiculous.

Conversation tonight:

Mom: I feel sorry for you.

Me: Why?

Mom: You write erotica and barely get paid and 50 Shades of Gray gets a movie deal

Me: Tell me about it.

Mom: How can they make a movie of that that isn't a porno?

Me: I've been asking that for a while now.


Going to my writers group this week which is great since lately I've been feeling like I have no one to talk to.

I need to stop mainlining 80's music. I've been using the top 100 billboards and youtubing song after song. If I keep this up my 80's vampire story WILL be my nano and I don't want it to be (because it will be erotica and that is my deal with myself, every other year on the erotica vs non-erotica. Also it's making me feel old.

I also need to stop looking at houses because it makes me cry. I just found my house. I love everything about this house So why aren't I buying it? 52 miles from work and over budget. In a place whre 140K is usually STILL a goddamn doublewide, this will go for this price. If I thought I could lowball this, I would suck that drive up. I love the inner lines of this place.

It's both too in town for me but this is a nice house. Pomeroy must really suck as a place to live if beautiful homes keep going for pittances.

Funny thing: Know that show 'Bob's Burgers'? They just had an episode where one of the daughters writes fanfiction, and when she ficced about everything there is to fic she wrote 'friend-fiction'.

I'm keeping my eye on it. Maybe it won't sell and it will come down to where they get desperate enough to accept my pitiful amount because seriously at that distance, gas + mortage + student loans becomes an issue

omg... they are making that 50 shades crap into a movie?? but... what used to be 'soft porn' is now rated R, and some pretty major stars are doing what should be considered XXX porn. chloe sevigny for one. Brown Bunny is an indy project where she was filmed giving a very lengthy blow job to the director/star. I've seen the whole clip.

That first house is great. Actually, they're all nice, but it always makes me a little nervous, houses on top of dirt, like, landslide central.

RE: the writing of the porn. I KNOW! Every time I read about 50 shades, I think of my online writing friends who write SO MUCH BETTER, but who make so less money. I think ELJ has a publicist - and that can make a difference. Back in the day, when my buffy book was being published, one of my friends advised me to work with a publicist, but I couldn't afford it, so I chose not to. I was told that was the difference between a best seller and a "good" seller. oy!

As for the houses: that house that's 52 miles away is gorgeous!! - but, you know, the house in Athens is very nice --- and it looks - at least from the photo - not to be too much in town.....

sadly the Athens house is like 49 miles away Albany is about 35 miles which is where I want but everything there all the way up to 160K are double wides

I don't know how (okay I do know, dad was being a dick) they got down there in the first place (i.e they were marked for upstairs, the movers from ManPower didn't show up, probably at their parole meetings, and he and my brother just threw everything in the basement. Mom and I tried to sort it out but how could you when he kept throwing stuff down?)

It is informative to swoop down on some of these properties via Google Earth. Nobody bothered to do a Street View on any of these places, but you can get enough of a grainy overhead view to see that the Pomeroy house is crammed in beside several others, and there's a huge cemetery just down the road from the Athens house with the crumbly brick retaining wall.

Writers' groups make you feel like less of a freak. I couldn't survive without mine. There's just nowhere else to talk shop with people who are doing the same insane thing you're doing and who understand everything you're going through. And then still encourage you to do it.

Pomeroy is right the Ohio River (what do you want to bet it floods?), you have to look at West Virginia across said river, and there's a tattoo parlor front and center on Main Street. What's not to like?

I do not understand Street View. You can drive every street in my neighborhood in this podunk town and look at all my embarrassing white-trash neighbors, but you can't get off the main drags in Ohio. Double standard, boo.

Is it a nice cemetery, or one of the modern ones with little bronze plaques and acres of grass?
