Paw Paw festival
Sep. 14th, 2013 10:41 pmLuckily this time it was a system wide failure that they got fixed in 24 hours with the net but still.
I did make it to the tail end of the farmers' market. I should never ever be left alone in one of those places unsupervised. I bought in no particular order, lavender jelly, baby ginger (to try and root) a dwarf Alberta spruce (to bonsai), white tomatoes (will claim seeds), red okra (OMG fried Okra!) and thai eggplants, yeah I have NO idea what to do with them but I will google that. I found nothing to eat since most everything was sold out for lunch other than pulled pork (gross, other than bacon I don't eat pork). I might as well run thru the market tossing money in the air.
I thought okay I can skip Kroger's and maybe drive to the other side of town to the Sonic's for lunch. Half way there I say screw it. There will be food at the Paw Paw fest and it was pretty packed at noon. I should just go there and if I remember right it will have non-burger options. On my way I was behind a blue Prius. Last night at the winery I had mentioned I might go and L said she'd call me if she went for a ride in Athens and dropped by the Paw Paw fest. We both pulled into the rest stop and it WAS L in the Prius. So we went to the fest together.
It was SO MUCH bigger than it used to be. And since Athens is so hippie to begin with almost EVERY food truck had a vegetarian option. I love ALi Baba's gyros (Athens food truck) I got that. We waited in the giant line for the beer tokens and got 2 of them figuring on 2 glasses which is our usual. The first was Black Box's paw paw which was an 8.2 beer and had peppercorns in it (you could taste that). excellent beer.
The music was good. I could have dropped hundreds here if I let myself. There was one artist from the Irish Fest that I knew. I did get mom a glass vase with dicroic glass insets, I got 2 kinds of overpriced paw paws (it's not a fruit that travels well nor does it look attractive mind you, tastes kinda like banana/mango with a custardy texture.
We got the second beer Thirsty Dog's Belgain paw paw, very sweet and fruity, still very good but holy crap these had way more alcohol than your standard beer. Both of us were feeling it and the heat didn't help. It was cold this morning (40's) and wasn't even supposed to be 70. It was well into the 80s but naturally we were dressed for the 50-60's we were promised. I still stink of sweat and portapotty and I DID bathe. It's jammed in my nostrils.
We went to the drum circle and the Native American flute playing. And well so many other things. I picked up pumpkin spice fudge (tastes like pie). I buy from her all the time at the farmer's market (almost did today so glad I didn't because they didn't have this flavor). She had 80 lbs of paw paw fudge but was sold out by 3 pm when we got there and at 5$/half pound she made a killing.
We got a lot of conservation info which will be helpful in class. She wanted to go on the free canoe ride but I can't paddle with this shoulder so I had to bow out of that. They had a dog rescue thing going on and some great textile stuff. I wanted the purse with the tree on it but I don't have 70$ to spend on a purse (unless that was all I was getting)
After we parted ways, I got a henna tatt and learned last week there was a steampunk thing in Athens. Waah. the tatt should be pretty but the part that closed the circle didn't take (fell off way early) so I am gonna be sad about that. the rest should be good (yes they're a giant waste of money but I like them and I usually only do it once or twice a year) This one puts glitter over the henna to help alert people to not hit into it. cool...until I realized oh god it's all over my car...my hair...my cat. I had to put down a blanket on the couch. I did take a couple pictures of it.
I'm SO tired now. I wasn't prepared for 6 hours in the sun (It was a tiny thing last time I went years ago) I wasn't prepared either for L telling me she wanted to put solar panels on her house (that group was there) but didn't want to at the same time because it meant she was never leaving this place. She's been here 20 years. I know how she feels. Oh how I know.
