So today I had my testing. I was a tad worried since a STORM came rolling through around noon and all I could think was great, I'll be stuck in the damn MRI tube. Ever wonder what your coffin will look like from the inside? Go get an MRI.

But first I had to have an arthrogram which is almost a mini-surgical procedure. They have to sterilize the area, in this case my entire right shoulder from boob over to collarbone over to end of shoulder then drape it so you don't contaminate the site.

Then you're shoved under a fluroscope, think X-Ray but designed to be used live in surgery so you see it on a screen. They first put in one needle with lidocaine (anesthetic) and the X-ray contrast and saline. This needle has to be big and thick enough to go from right under the collarbone are INTO the shoulder joint and the cute young doctor had to fan that needle about 180 degrees to numb everything up so he can get the even bigger needle with the contrast dye for the MRI which is shot into the joint. After which you are let up and made to do shoulder exercises to make that dye move around. The idea is if the joint capsule is torn or the tendon sheathes are the dye leaks out and we can visualize the tear. Then you get slid into the MRI

The MRI wasn't bad except for the last bit. They pulled me out, put my bad arm over my head (which is you know the PAINFUL thing for me) and shoved me back in. I nearly had to use the panic button because the pain was so bad. But I didn't. They gave me the pictures but my computer won't open them. sigh. I wanted to see if the dye leaked.

I thought okay maybe I should go to the China Buffet or see if that Italian place I like was open since I was in Gallipolis. I was a little hungry but it was only 4 pm. I went home. WRONG choice. the power was out. I waited two hours, gave up went back to Rio to my favorite bar hang out that I hadn't been to in forever and had a calzone. Came home and saw the power came on 2 minutes after I left. 0_o

I did get some writing done today and realized that whenever I hear about a werewolf smiling I picture this dog

The anesthesia has worn off. My shoulder HURTS.

ETA - The bar had a beer I wanted to try, Fat Tire, a Belgium Ale (which my waitress described as Dark. apparently someone needs to see what dark beer is). I found it acidic, way too acidic. Not pleasant, at least not to me.

Now I'll think about that dog whenever I see a dog smiling (and I see it a lot around here).

I apparently can READ about needles, I just can't have them injected into my flesh. :)

Hey, you got a yummy calzone out of it, right?

My mom twisted her arm once and they made her do the same thing for her MRI. She was in agony. They already know you're hurting so why not made it worse.... there has to be an easier way to do these things. I so feel your pain. My hip has been bothering lately and I am really hoping that I don't have to have yet another MRI. I think I have had every part of me looked at LOL.

unfortunately there is not. Unless we can image the entire joint it's a waste of time. Until someone invents a tricorder this is the best we can do. I will say it might be better if all MRIs were open so it would be less painful BUT they take (or did, prehapss they've improved it) inferior pictures.

You and me both. I can't think of a joint that hasn't been imagined or an internal organ other than my heart.

Hope the hip feels better

The tests and treatment so often seem worse than the problem itself ...

true though in this case, when he asked me is it hurting I replied this is nothing like the pain this shoulder is in.

yeah anesthetics wear off very quickly on me and I can't take pain meds either. Wish I could then this shoulder wouldn't have degenerated so quickly.

thanks

Ouch.

I'm pretty sure the MRI was originally invented to diagnose claustrophobia.

I'm sure it was. Luckily as a former spelunker, that is not one of my problems (though the former is probably why my shoulders are shot to hell now)
