Mom's Trip and some more appreciation
Mar. 14th, 2005 04:49 pmHere it is, Mom's trip. I'll just cut it for length
Mom and I had a good time during her visit. She arrived Thursday. It was snowing and we toured Rhinelander (such as that is, a downtown of nothing but antique stores and bars) and the school. My boss met us for dinner at our usual bar. I warned Mom he liked to talk and I wasn’t proven wrong. We were there for hours over pizza and beer.
Mom liked the house, which is a nice little house for a single person (or a childless couple since it’s only a two bedroom and would require building on to make another bedroom or work room). The house behaved itself for her (of course, though with the replaced sensor, life here in actually warm).
Friday we went to the casino where we planned on staying the night. The Lake of the Torches is a nice little casino. Pretty, art work full of Ojibwa symbolism. Best of all most of the slots are for tightwads like us, mostly nickel machines, some penny and two cents machine (which I’ve never seen before), and of course the usual quarter, 50 cent and dollar machines as well as blackjack table. What I liked about it was that they had all sorts of different machines (the casino I go to back home has bank after bank of the same machines and I get bored easily). My favorite machine was the Elvira nickel machines, which had three special games on them (that’s what I like about the nickel machines, they’re like video games almost). One of the games the ‘midnight matinee’ where you had to pick one of those horrible old horror movies that Elvira used to host for money or pick the set amount one that featured her movies (I always picked the others because there was a 50% chance of doing better than what her feature offered) I came away with about 100$ from her alone.
We ate dinner there at the Eagle’s Nest which has a buffet (expensive on Friday since it’s all sea food) but mostly the rest of the menu is so expensive the buffet looks good in comparison. I pigged out on snow crab legs and remembered why I hate frog legs. We went to the pool, which is really cool. They had a sauna and a kiddie pool with black bears in it and a tree with a bee hive draining out water for the kiddies to play in. There was a clover shaped Jacuzzi and the pool itself is oddly shaped, multi-lobed with ‘rocks’ in the middle. One load had another Jacuzzi, another had fountains arcing water into the pool. Mom and I availed ourselves of all of this except the kiddie pool.
We also went to hear Pop Warner’s Cajun band and that was kind of a rip off. Granted it was 10$ only but they wanted you to buy the Mardi Gras stuff (it was Northern Mardi Gras days i.e. Spring break) but since I have tons of plastic beads I didn’t. The band was a good Cajun band but without a dance partner it wasn’t that exciting. We did get to see one rather intoxicated older Ojibwa man dancing with a blinking Jester’s hat on his head and a half dozen helium balloons tied to his belt. And then there was this one lady, let me just say that the hands over your head, grinding your butt into your man’s crotch dance looks very disturbing when the woman’s obviously 70+ (but go Granny go). A couple of Ojibwa girls broke out into traditional pow wow grass dances. That was fun.
Went back and gambled some more (with a break so Mom could watch Stargate). Since I was new to the casino if I earned 30 points on my player’s card they’d give me 10$. I took that put it in a dollar machine and won 200$. I also tilted three machines. Sigh. We played a little on Saturday but they had obviously tightened up the machines so we left (in fact the casino got fined this weekend for over tightening the machines). We went to Eagle River to go shopping but oddly all the shops were closed by 3:30.
So we came home, hung out with my landlord for a while and just relaxed. Sunday we went shopping around Three Lakes and then I took her to the airport. I think she had a good time
I just wanted to appreciate some icon makers. I usually go to these ladies for my Connor icons (not that they don't do other lovely icons but you know my fixation. So check out the work of
