Well, it was pretty obvious really. If they had said he had cheated at first, it would have taken away a lot of Buffy's guilt, and a lot of the show was about her guilt, so...

Actually I didn't think it was obvious. It would have been much more interesting if it were about her. We never had enough about Hank to figure out anything about him so we go with the lowest common denominator. Granted men cheating is common. I'd have been far more impressed if it had been Joyce

I always got the impression that Hank and Joyce married very young, possibly because Joyce was knocked up with Buffy, and then the two of them just grew apart--fights happened, Hank started stepping out, Buffy started having trouble at school, Joyce filed for divorce. What I minded was not the implication that Hank cheated, but the way the writers turned him into a deadbeat dad just because it was 'too much trouble' to have him find out about the slaying.

I think it was a retcon, it wasn't mentioned until season 5 when he became the never seen dead beat Dad.

4. In S7, Buffy says she thinks he cheated. But it's not something she's ever mentioned anywhere else. In S5, she comments that he's in Europe with his secretary and thus misses Joyce's funeral.

But - so little is done with Hank that it's open to interpretation. For all we know, he's been dead since late S5... Perhaps it's his latter-day relationship with the secretary and Buffy's own bitterness that leads her to conclude that Hank was cheating... and perhaps he wasn't. Or maybe he was. As far as I'm concerned, most anything with Hank is in-bounds because he's so absent from the actual story. Who knows what he'd have to say?

I agree with you about Hank and cheating husbands are nothing new. WHich is probably why I'm disappointed they brought it up. They could have done something more interesting.

With the exception of the comment of Buffy's to Holden it's never discussed elsewhere that Hank cheated on Joyce. I am pretty sure that from the fight we overhear in Season Two flashback, they're fighting over Buffy. Also Season One/Two show that Buffy was really afraid that her Dad left because of her and not because of cheating.

If anything I think that you could get away with whatever you wanted to do with Hank.

Probably because people would rather see Hank as the bad guy than Joyce. If I had the time I'd love to write a story where Joyce was the bad one. Hmmm... maybe I should post that as a challenge on Sunnydale writers.

I think that the only way that Joss actually bashes Hank is that he disappears after a certain point, I mean in season one and two, we do see him seeing Buffy on a somewhat regular basis.
