100 things #25 Mushroom Soup and some geek talk

I'm trying to finish edits so no writerly ways today and all I did today was grade all the things. Instead have a recipe I got off the internet yesterday and made today. It was pretty yummy and a lot less sodium than the canned version.




{Take the 100 Things challenge: 100 (mostly diabetic) recipes!}



4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2 pounds white mushrooms, coarsely chopped
2 portobello mushrooms—stems discarded, black gills reserved for garnish, caps coarsely chopped
2 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced
Salt and freshly ground white pepper
6 cups vegetable broth or water
3/4 cup heavy cream
12 dill sprigs

In a pot, melt the butter. Add the mushrooms and the garlic; season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook over moderate heat, until the mushrooms are softened, 5 minutes. Add the broth and 1/2 cup of the cream; bring to a boil. Cover and simmer until the mushrooms are tender, 10 minutes.

Working in batches, puree the soup in a food processor. Return the soup to the pot, season with salt and pepper and keep warm.

In a saucepan, bring the remaining 1/4 cup of cream to a boil. Remove from the heat; whisk until frothy. Ladle the soup into bowls, top with the frothed cream, garnish with the dill and portobello gills and serve.

From Chef Michel Bras. His had toasted bread mixed in but I omitted that for the diabetics. Also You can use an immersion blender and it will froth up that cream


So this Dr. Who was the first time I felt like I was watching the Doctor all season and I enjoyed it except for one major thing
I was just about to say ENOUGH with Clara and Dan.

Now I don't buy for one moment she loves him. These two have no chemistry but that's not my problem.

Once again we have the 'I hate soldiers' thing going on. Um no, he really doesn't. He doesn't like guns.

And really it smacks of complete and utter disrespect and just a bit of racism that the Doctor refuses to acknowledge that a soldier of African descent can be a math teacher. Was that supposed to be funny? Not laughing at him relegating Dan to PE teacher. Yes, granted he has a history of mocking his female companion's men. Jealousy? Not sure. He called Mickie, Rickie all the time for example. He was slightly kinder to Rory.

I was so hoping Dan would just go away because these scenes are grinding the plots to a complete and utter halt.

Frankly the young girl, Disruptive, was more interesting as a companion than Clara and Dan at this point.

And then Dan broke out his Winter Soldier skills on that thing and became interesting.

All I can say is I just hope Dan is right and this was all about the Doctor trying to prove he's good enough for Clara and we can put all this awkward bullshit behind us because I'm this close to finding something else to watch on Saturday night.




I'm on a quest - the oldest bars in every state I've been in the one in SD and Yellow Springs is about 100 miles from here. I can do that.

And Tonight’s Simpson’s interesting article and at least they didn't spoil too much in the headline (that had been spoiled forever ago) unlike the one for Bones that proudly proclaimed an immense spoiler then stuck (spoilers) after the damn thing. I don't watch Bones but if I did I'd have been pissed.

Also it's not possible Bones has been on 10 year which means Angel has been off for even longer. Sigh. I'm getting SO OLD.

If you go to Ye Old Trail Tavern in Yellow Springs, let me know when. I'll join you there for a beer. Yellow Springs is only about 30-40 minutes for me. Ye Old Trail Tavern is also featured in Haunted Ohio, so it's a double whammy for you.
