I was thinking today about a new meditation challenge I'm on. It taught a new way of breathing, breathing in the ten directions. The idea is to be more aware of your own body and the importance of air. You breathe into the right then left front then back and then into the abdomen and lower back (which now that I think about it is only 6 directions but you get the point).

I turned out to be rather good at it. Or at least in my brain I felt like I was hitting all these places and it got me thinking. The idea was to abandon old patterns, flush them out and try something new.

I could certainly stand to do that in my writing. Some things will probably never change in my first drafts. I'll still probably never have commas where they belong. I'll use 'just' 'really' 'very' and 'that' far too much.

But I could be more cognizant of other things. I got accused of over using eyes in a couple reader reviews (though some of them were also so dumb you just wanted to sit them down with a book and tell them to LEARN). However, I am guilty as charged. Eyes are the first thing I usually notice and oddly enough, avoid looking directly at (works for me in some cultures, not so much in my own).

I keep saying I'll try to work in more description into draft one so it's less onerous in draft two. I don't know why I have such a block about this but I do. But hey any more editors all want us to be Hemmingway and slice it all out anyhow.

I don't know how to work the new into my writing exactly but it's something that will be in the back of my head.

And that's it for me this week. I put my back out even worse than it has been. I tried to get the chicken out of the fridge for dinner and my back locked so bad one leg went numb and out from under me. I would have fallen if not for the fridge door. I have to go to the doc tomorrow for something else. I'll have her look at this.

The breathing thing sounds interesting. Hmmm. Could be good to try.
