Most of the older profs agree it's a spin off of 'no child left behind' but every semester I'm greeted with more and more 'just give me the A' but I'm not doing the work. I finally sat down to record the online homework grades (5 assignments so far) only to find that 2/3s of the class was missing 50% of the assignments and 1/3 had done NONE. I don't even know what do with that. Students are so USED to someone fixing their mistakes, they have no ideas of the ramifications of not doing their work. And this after 1/3 of the class missing more than 50 out of 80 questions on the bone test.

Enough of that bullshit. Have some fun links Sean Pertwee cosplaying his father thanks to ES for this one.

I have a guest blogger over on Jana's blog. Come say hi here

Terrible Mind’s nano tips

And now for the kinda messed up Father’s revenge against a rapist Okay I am not promoting this kind of action but in a country where rape barely warrents a wrist slap and is rampant, I can understand his motivation.

And for all the kinds of fucked up. this one is truly disturbing. That’s your warning And I'm even MORE disturbed by the commentors who aren't mentally ill (I assume) saying 'so what? he's only digging up DEAD CHILDREN.

I love Sean Pertwee dressing up like his dad. Just love.

And the two other scary links are just scary, though the second one kind of seems like my "All the Flowers Growing Wild" story.

And of course, if you tell the students this, they'll just give you blank looks, if they pay attention at all.

Yup. You know me.

It is very messed up. -_-

So, have you told them that? Was there a reaction? Or more blank looks?

How very sad.

On the up side, I caught five mice since yesterday. So much for "not needing to bait" these traps. A little dab of peanut butter, and voila.

Time for the kiddies to wake up and smell the failure. If you don't do the work, you don't pass the class.

My hubs works with school groups of all ages at one of the "Colonial Triangle" tourist historic re-enactment sites - they get shuffled thru in droves as part of their pro forma efforts to fulfill the basic requirements of the NCLB standards. There is the occasional positive exception, but he is routinely appalled at how uninformed, uninterested, and uneducated the vast majority of the kids (from gr.3 thru 12) all seem to be. I wonder sometimes if growing up in an era where they've been constantly distracted (and over-entertained) by video games & crapola TV, and (more importantly) where they've been bathed in this ethos of "it's all there on the net on my phone/iPad/laptop" they've just got this attitude of why should they bother to have to actually work to learn anything. I have a dear friend who's taught English in high school for over 20 years, and she's seen the work ethos go steadily down while the sense of entitlement has gone steadily up, and it's probably going to end up driving her to retire early to save her sanity. So you are definitely not alone in what you're encountering. My only suggestion, which based on what I've heard you say over the years on the subject, is something you already do: be one of the adults who demands adult behaviour from them by simply teaching them they're adults making decisions, and every decision they make - just like in the rest of their life - has consequences. you've clearly laid out your expectations - if they fall flat on their face, so be it. (And I say that as someone who did it myself more than once in my education before I learned!)

As for the doll guy..... Well first, just.... Yuck. Second I knew somehow before I even finished your info about him that the dude was Russian - I don't know why. Third, I suppose there's some redemption in that he didn't feel the need to shop for and kill live kids - I guess that's the only way it could have been much worse. And last (but not least) it must be a measure of how sick I've gotten that all I could think of watching the video was, "Wow! This is the weirdest f*^%ing episode of "Hoarders" EVER!" I guess it was just my brain's usual defense system of humor against horror kicking in....but once I thought it, I just kept picturing the Hoarders crew handling the story with all their typical cliches..... (Oh, and I decided about six months ago that I'm NOT reading comments on much of anything anymore, ever, other than LJ and other lit sites, and Amazon. The STUPID, it burns..... It's just pointless, and I do not need more pointless aggravation in my life.)

Ok... I'll go to bed now before I do any more damage.....

I wouldn't blame games and tv. That's all my generation did (I mean we pretty much were the generation where the video games were first spawn and there's slews of cognitive research suggestion games increase intelligence). I think that it is what you also suggested, why learn anything when I can look it up and in the last decade if they make mistakes the schools FIX it so 'no child is left behind.' I'm seeing a vast exodus of anyone near retirement age.

My thought on this that many articles now HIDE comments which I say thank the goddess because the hatred and stupid is so rampant. I wish they would on Youtube too.

but yeah I guess it could be worse. He could be killing them but it is all kinds of WTF

that's so sad and scary about young people and the state of education... We have a lot of that down here too. I think it's everywhere in this country now. We live in a place where "educated" and "progressive" have become accusations :/

It's not just here. It's world wide. Why learn anything when you can look it up on your phone? (they actually said that in a person of interest episode)
