I have no idea WHERE Kanda dug him up from. It was from a Christmas pack of toys from last year. He tossed it by the couch where I squished him. Later I found him in Kanda's cube. Funny thing is I was watching Frozen at the time.

A little worried about my cousin (you know the born again one who thinks aborted fetuses are made into vaccines). He had a hip replacement about 2-3 weeks ago then got pulmonary blood clots. Now he's in extreme pain and feverish and the surgeon is all 'oh he has a virus.' I'm like get him to the ER now just in case it's an infected implant. Shakes head.

And it was a sad day for Mom. She turned off Grandma's phone at the house, finally admitting she's not ever coming back. The phone company didn't want to. Isn't there ANYONE else who wants this? You've had this number since 1950. Yeah sort of broke everyone's heart a little there. I really wished I had found a job back home. I could have taken the house and the number. Mom's getting a little worried about how depressed I am. I can no longer fake it on the phone.

But THANK YOU for those who weighed in on my vampire question (not a single person did on Nano. Some days I feel like I'm shouting into a maelstrom and no one hears me).

Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] pandoranc Hope it was a good day

Okay I'm shocked at how much hate this finale has generated in some places (though most of my friends seemed to like it). I liked it well enough. At least it wrapped up all the 'am I a good man' and 'he's an officer' bullshit (and may we never hear of it again).

I did miss at first what he found at Gallifrey's spot. I was assuming the world was entirely dead even if it was back. Others have said empty space so I guess there's that.

I did like Clara's trying to fool the Cybermen and while Calpadi did make a case for the cybermen tying this to its history I can say honestly I can live without ever seeing another Dalek or cyberman.

I did like that they saved the leader of UNIT (yes I'm failing to remember her name) and a little sad the one with the asthma inhaler (ditto on the name) got killed.

But here's the question, why the hell did Danny send back some anonymous boy? Was this one last act of goodness and protecting the kids on his part? I was confused but at the same time, kinda hoping this is the very last I need to see of him and Clara because they weren't working for me.

I love Missy (it was her that so many people objected to) I thought it was a fantastic performance and the one thing that kept me watching. Yes the Mary Poppins thing was way over the top but it was meant to be. I would like to see her again (and yes, this does pave the road for a gender switch in the Doctor later. I don't know that it will go over well but it does have potential)

declutter day 297 item tossed-The Restorer why kept-Wanted to read why tossed- I liked the first book but not the second. The library has them so…

here's the question, why the hell did Danny send back some anonymous boy?

The boy was the boy Danny killed when he was in the firefight in Iraq. He thought there was an enemy soldier in the house and instead it was the innocent boy. Danny carried that guilt with him for the rest of his life, so this was his chance to make amends for taking the boy's life.

Cats have a pocket universe they can pull things from. That's all there is to it.

Sorry you're feeling depressed. Feeling down myself. Meh.

Kinda glad to see the end of Clara and Danny. I hope they do better in Season 2.

good grief, yes, any time there is fever and pain like that after surgery the first thought should be is that area infected or are they rejecting the implant. that dr and my husband seem just as clueless (see today's post) and this is NOT a good thing

and hugs for you and your mom

Thanks. To me it sounds like that doc is trying to shift blame (if you had any idea how the Q&A crap worked in a hospital you'd understand. It's the system you get when people who know nothing of medicine make the rules)

oh geez

and thanks

The boy was a civilian Danny killed by accident when he was in the army, so he was trying to make amends by saving the boy's life rather than his own.

Leader of UNIT: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, daughter of Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. Her assistant (SOB!) was Osgood.

I liked Missy -- the best incarnation of the Master since maybe Robert Delgado (I may be in the minority there, but I think so).

I'm still on the fence about this entire season, but there were a lot of good PARTS.

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you on the Vampire question -- I meant to, but I kept struggling with my own (lack of) plot problems and I forgot. *major fail*

Thanks! Now, the Brigadier was a character in the 60-70s version right? I rather like the name Lethbridge.

I liked Missy a lot.

And same here. There were things I liked. I particularly like the Orient Express one. I did really hate the anti-soldier thing, the am I a good man thing and more or less the amount of dislike Danny heaped on him (though jealousy is always a problem for me)

No worries. I know you're busy. Heck you might have the same question. I know the one we're reading had Sean Patrick teaching Della so...

The Brig got to play opposite more Doctors than any other companion in the entire run of the show. He started with Two, as a Lt. Colonel, then got his promotion and was a regular with Three and a good part of Four, appeared with Five in "The Five Doctors" and Seven in "Battlefield," and has been mentioned extensively since. He also appeared most recently as the Brig in the Sara Jane Adventures. They were going to do something with him and 11, but unfortunately the actor got sick; he passed away before he could make the appearance. The tribute to him was at the end of "The Wedding of River Song," when someone called the Doctor to let him know the Brig had died and couldn't make their meeting.

Having him "reappear," even as a Cyberman, brought tears to my eyes. And hell, yes, he'd shoot The Master/Missy -- he and the Master NEVER got along.

I'm a big fan of the Brig. He's awesome.

I think I would have been happier if they'd leave off the repressed sexual tension between the Doctor and his companion and just have 12 GET ALONG with Danny, the same way he always got along with his male companions. I don't know why that's so hard for these writers today.

That's what I thought though I didn't know he had played against so many Doctors. I do remember how upset everyone was when the actor passed. I did like that he finally got his salute from the Doctor.

Oh no kidding. It's just crazy. I was kinda hoping Osgood would be the next companion since she was so smart but that's gone. I'll just be glad to see Clara and Danny go.

We recently got "Battlefield" on Netflix - that was wonderful. I may have to see it again, now I'm thinking on it.

I actually liked Danny, but never liked the way they handled him. Clara has been up and down for me. (Of course, she was following some pretty great companions, and that's always tough.)

cool

Okay yeah I liked Danny but I didn't like what they did with the character a lot of times or the disrespect he showed the Doctor and vice versa (and the uncomfortable thought occurs that Nicky, Danny and Rory were treated differently. The Doctor seemed more respectful to Rory, or less seemed to mock him less unless I'm misremembering which I rather hope I am)

Date: 2014-11-13 12:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
He TEASED Rory on a regular basis, and he certainly twitted him a lot, but the Doctor does that to EVERYONE. He was downright mean to Mickey more than a few times, true, but it was always with the "I know you can be better" level of Doctor-meanness (which was true to the character all the way back to One) that actually pushed him to, well, be better.

I never seen from the Doctor before the level of sheer disdain which he showed Danny. Maybe it was because for the first time the Doctor ran into a human being who was pretty well complete in himself, and didn't NEED the Doctor to make him better (wow, I just had a Doctor-piphany...!)

I'd have to go back and see some of the early meetings with the Brig (unfortunately, a lot of his first adventure is one of the lost Two episodes) and see if he was the same with him, because the Brig, too, was someone who just didn't NEED the Doctor to make him any better than he was already.

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
Yes agreed. He definitely teased Rory but he seemed to tease most people. He was rather mean to Jack.

Micky (Did I call him Nicky? I'm as bad as the Doctor) usually had his name changed and did complain about being the tin dog but really neither him or Rose were that smart IMO

But yes, it was demeaning the way he treated Danny. Hmm you could be right. I've never seen the Brig so I'm not help there but it would be interesting to see

TEN was mean to Jack -- Nine loved him, and I can't figure out why Barrowman feels that "Ten is his Doctor!" when Ten always treated him so shabbily. (Another heart lost to Ten's pretty face.)

I liked Mickey -- I preferred Rose when Mickey was traveling with them, and some of my favorite episodes have them as equal companions (like "Girl in the Fireplace"). I didn't like them just suddenly putting him with Martha (who already had a fiancee, HELLO), but there had to be a Mega Happy Ending for all Ten's stalwart supporters. (Gag me.)

I never thought of Rose and Mickey as stupid, but naive and young -- they grew up. The trouble with Rose is she grew petulant, whiney, and possessive, which were not at all attractive on her. I was glad Billie Piper played The Moment in Day of the Doctor instead of Rose...

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
I think Barrowman might like Ten moreso because Tennant is supposedly a nice guy and Ecclestone has nothing good to say about Dr. Who.

I liked Mickey better than Rose and yes, of the Rose episodes, I liked the ones with him best. Yes putting him with Martha was just weird. You know at this point everyone knows how obsessed SF fans are. Shouldn't someone be checking for continuity and crap like that?

I'm sure we were supposed to get young and naive out of them. I guess I have no patience for that.

But yeah Rose got possessive and rather ugly as it went on. Honestly I didn't start watching until Martha. I mean I watched off and on with Rose but with Martha I watched every week. However in rewatching I'm noticing just how much time they spent on her attraction to the Dr. Sigh.

Could be, could be.

No patience for the young and naive, and you write Young Adult fiction. :)

I loved Martha, and she REALLY got the short end of the stick. Following Rose was hard enough, but then they had to saddle her with that idiotic "unrequited LUUUUURVE" BS. She should have just been what she was: A Great Companion.

At least we have a Season of Donna, even if I don't know if I'll EVER be able to watch the ending again.

I Know, right and I spend ALL DAY every day with the young and the naive (mostly crushing their little hopes and dreams but still).

Martha is still one of my favorite companions and yes, exactly as if following Rose wasn't bad enough....i was rather amused she and Jack sort of laid into the Doctor about dear blond Rose and he really took the heat.

Yeah

Hey, speaking of that episode I just mentioned, if I remember right, 9 was the Doc who first met Jack. And then when he hooks back up with 10 and Martha, he mentions he traveled with the Doctor (I guess we're to assume in between Rose and Martha or something or in the far flung future or whatever) Anyhow, you read a lot more of this than I do but are there any of the pro-fanfic novels with Jack as the companion (I know there's the Torchwood ones)

Date: 2014-11-15 03:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Jack traveled with Rose and The Doctor from the end of "The Doctor Dances" all the way through "Parting of the Ways." This time included a lot of Doctor Nine novels. It gave him five adventures on-screen with Doctor Nine & Rose (that includes "The Empty Child"), and we know they did a LOT during that time because in "Boom Town" we saw them sitting at a restaurant together talking over their past adventures that we had not been privy to.

I recently read "Only Human," which is a Doctor Nine, Rose, & Jack story. I assume some of the other Doctor Nine books also feature Jack, but I haven't read all the Nine books.

I didn't realize he had traveled that much with Rose and 9 (like I said I didn't watch all of those). So that makes senses now. Thanks

I highly recommend S1 of New Who. Eccelston was "Fantastic!" and Rose was much better with Nine -- she was HIS companion, I don't care what the Ten/Rose shippers say. There were some damned fine stories there (and when the Daleks appear, then it really freaking MEANT SOMETHING).

Date: 2014-11-15 04:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
I did see all of those. I liked him, not her. She was why I fell away more or less until 10

I DID like the Dalek episode though

From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Well, you didn't see ALL of them, you said, if you didn't see the second half of the series (with Jack). :)

No, I liked Rose -- I can pinpoint the episode where I stopped liking her: The stupid antics in "Tooth & Claw." Then even more in "School Reunion," where she gets jealous of both Sarah Jane AND Mickey, and then the capper came in "Idiot's Lantern." By "Doomsday" was ready to see her backside forever. (And it SHOULD have been forever. That perfect ending was destroyed by RTD when he brought her back. The final season of Ten was eight parts awesome Donna and two parts "my God, get rid of Ten already."

Fair point or more likely I saw them and don't remember (which is becoming a disturbing trend). Though in the beginning I did have issues because I didn't get the channel (thanks for nothing DISH).

Oh yes, the jealousy over Sarah Jane (Now I would like to netflix her episodes with...Tom Baker? based on her character with the 21st cen. Doctors). Yes, agreed, Rose should not back been brought back. Sigh.

Hee, Donna was awesome. (She looks so much like my best friend from college it's scary, to the point Mom called me after her first appearance to ask if I had seen) I did like 10 all the way to the end but agree you have a valid point about his emo-ness

Date: 2014-11-15 07:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Sarah Jane started with Three (Jon Pertwee) and stayed a good way into Four's (Tom Baker) tenure. She also had her own series, of course!

It was the last episodes of Donna's season that did it for me with Ten. Now, I'll admit it was the writers' fault -- it would have been kinder to just kill Donna off than do what was done to her -- but it left me very bitter about all of Ten's tenure (when I had really loved him up until then, although the continual "I do miss Rose!" was old and getting older all the time). I also really, really, really REALLY hated the "here's an exact copy of me, so you can have a Happy Ending (tm)!" final ending for Rose. Just killed all the good that was done with "Doomsday."

And then five specials of him moping around waiting to die... feh.

He was more what I remembered and loved in the 50th Anniversary Special. That's how I'd like to think of Ten's time in the Blue Box.

I did not know she had her own series (I.e. I'm not that far into my Dr Who history reading). That is very cool.

I see your point and mostly agree with it (with a bit less bitterness) but yes the whole second copy of him given to Rose creeped me the hell out

The 50th anniversary special was very good
