Is just how sick the heat makes me. Leave off the fact that it makes my skin peel off for a moment. I can live with that pain. But even a few minutes in the heat makes me nauseated to the point I can hardly stand up. Worse, it makes me so tired I can barely function. I honestly wasn't sure I was safe to drive home today. It's Ninety-two freaking degrees today with high humidity. I was so freaking sick. I KNEW that living in Florida would suck for me but desperate times and a generous offer from [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog made that choice for me. ELD and [livejournal.com profile] silvrethorn will tell you just how many outdoor events they were forced to abandon me under a tree because I was too sick to go on from the heat.

I thought the southwest would be better but after living there a month, the longest month of my life, I was proven wrong. I was just as sick and I thought I would be at least able to breathe because it wasn't humid. Nope. It was worse. Turns out I was allergic to everything Tucson is. 23 years later I've never been back. I was more sick in the desert than I was in the swamp (never saw that one coming). worse, with all due respect to my friends who live and love it, the southwest is pretty much my hell. Not green enough. Not cold enough.

And now I have to go back down there. You know that's why I don't even care I have just ONE full day to explore San Antonio. It's going to be 5 days of me praying for A/C (and going out at night). I couldn't go out in the day much anyhow. At least I know that and won't be too disappointed if I don't get to see much.

I just wish it wasn't Florida in Ohio right now. I went out early this morning (after Mom called me to taunt me about it being hotter here than the Carolinas and Florida) to my garden. He left NOTHING. He even managed to dig the blades into the ground and pull up plastic. I can't save any of my perennials because outside of the spirea, one rose and one yucca I can't tell where ANYTHING is. Okay I can see what used to be daylilies. Sigh.

Ever get the thought in your head that goes 'what is it about me that can kill a conversation?' I'm not talking about saying something controversial or anything. It's just that I've noticed that a conversation is going full tilt and I say something and it's deader than a doornail and I'm like wtf did I say wrong?

And I think a lot of you might be interested in this link, especially [livejournal.com profile] a2zmom and [livejournal.com profile] sholio, it's some meta not just about the new Avengers movie but on Joss's writing in general. I'm not a huge fan of meta as a rule (well to write it, I guess) but this article pretty much wrote it for me. I don't see Joss as a great feminist writer, never have and this article really hit a lot of my concerns and dislikes about both Firefly and DOllhouse Joss Whedon and women

And from my friend, ES, Sounds like a very cool series

I do remember how you'd have to collapse somewhere and we'd go do stuff. At Disney and other places, too. Glad you got home.

I read that article about Whedon and thought, 'yeaaaaaaah'. Made a good point. Or a lot of them.

Disney, all of Aimee's art shows, the renn fest...okay Florida and me don't agree. I should move to Iceland or something. Go marry a Viking.

It makes a ton of valid points in my eyes

It's not that you kill conversations. You're just so conscientious about replying to threads that you unintentionally end up having the last word. It's not your fault that your friends all have short attention spans.

That could also be. I like that better than I'm a conversation stopper

you and I are the same when it comes to heat

regarding the article on whedon:
I disagree with some of the assumptions/conclusions about his writing. For one thing, I don't think women have to be non-sexual or separated from their biology to be a strong female hero/lead. I still see Whedon as pro-women and women's rights. In fact, I think Buffy is one of the greatest female superheroes ever conceived. I think Whedon simply sees a female being as naturally more powerful - not sexually, but biologically. That isn't a slight. It's a huge compliment. Women have been associated with 'secret power' for longer than Whedon, whether with intuition or as healers.

Ever wonder why it was "Attack of the 50 foot Woman" and "The Incredible Shrinking Man" and not the other way around? It was sci-fi opposite day perception horror. The man fears being smaller or more insignificant, less powerful, while also fearing a larger, more powerful (and, yes, shrieking shrew) woman.

Whedon came along at a time when turning that on its head was a good exercise, for all of us. We needed to acknowledge and celebrate women and female power - and women having power usually only associated with men. We needed Buffy.

However, I can see the article writer's point in wanting male and female characters to be indistinguishable power and interest wise. That would be nice on occasion, and it does happen. I, personally, would like to see more muscle and less boob on female superheroes. Not all females have ideal figures: big boobs, small waist, etc. And not all men are tall with broad shoulders, so they could play with that too (hello, Ant Man!). But, meh, everything gets idealized or stereotyped in comic book land...

Hate the heat.

I do agree Buffy is one of the great female heroes. But in many ways she almost feels like a fluke in his writing. In his interviews, in some of the things he does, Joss strikes me as someone who has deep issues with women. He definitely sees as someone who will betray you, especially if you're our lover. He thrills to destroying every romance he writes, even more so if it's a fan favorite (witness Natasha/Clint, which I didn't give a damn about personally but it was pretty huge).

If a woman gets power she instantly goes insane with it as per Willow, though now seeing that exact same thing going on again on Grimm, I'm wondering if that's not Greenwalt's issue and not Joss (it's hard to know which one wrote which. I know a lot of the bullshit with the latter season Buffys was all on Marti Noxon).

Inara Kaylee, the Dolls, even Buffy's earliest mode of dress were all still women as nothing but sexual objects and utterly impractical when it comes to fighting in Buffy's case. Though, to be fair I think a lot of that was to prove she was a teen and to see it to the network.

I will absolutely agree to needing more muscle on these women warriors. I'm getting SO tired of some 90 pound waif throwing big dudes around like they were nothing. I was fine with it on Buffy because she's superhuman but I watch a lot of cop dramas and none of those women look like they could be actual cops for the most part (Mary on In Plain Sight was an exception). I'm supposed to believe a stick figure just took down the Hulk?

I have the same issues on The Arrow. I could easily handle Nyssa and Sarah being lady assassins because they had trained in the martial arts for years. But when Laurel and Thea became able to take out the league of assassin assassins with like 6 weeks of training I was insulted. This is not woman power. This is just stupid

Your reaction to heat sounds horrid. I love the heat as long as it's not too humid. I tend to be cold all the time.

I read the article and I think the poster missed the point of the scene. The commentors who disagreed are a lot more in line with my thinking.

heat is just awful. I can't deal with anything above 70 and Ive always been this way even when I was thin.

Fair enough. For me she's spot on. That is the only thing I took away from the scene which damn near ruined the entire movie for me

Goodness, I seem to be way back on responding to posts lately. Sorry…

I understand about the heat – I can’t stand it, either. When we went to Italy (the only time we’ve been anywhere hot) I insisted we went out of season as I knew it wouldn’t agree with me. Even then, it was too hot for me, and I felt quite bad in Pisa. Not ideal for a relaxing break…

If you don’t like the southwest because it isn’t green or cold enough, you should move to England. We do get warm days of course, but they don’t tend to be too bad and they don’t last too long, either! I just hope you like rain… but then, it does give us a green and pleasant land!

Move to England, Dana. We have crappy medical students too – we need you!

That's okay. I don't mind.

Oh good another person who doesn't like heat! I would love to visit Italy too but yes I would want to go in the winter personally.

Hahha I have other friends wanting me to move to Wales (I have the right last name after all). England and Wales are both tempting. As is Iceland and Canada but at least I know the language in all those places BUT Iceland.
