Because I spent the day that wasn't spent seeing aunts and uncles doing the cover reveal for the newest anthology I'm in, Of Heaven and Hell. I'm not entirely sure yet what I can and can not share because they want us to do a push on the day of release, June 12th. I DO have a book trailer for this (how cool is that) that I could probably give to anyone interested. I could also hand out a couple of ARCs to anyone who wants to read it (I have it in pdf, mobi and one other eformat that's left my tired tired brain). If anyone wants to read and review, let me know.

It's STILL raining by the way. I'm going to grow gills or figure out a spell to divert some of this to California.

Hey, Southwest folks, have any of you ever had mesquite bean jelly (or anything)? At Mission San Jose, the guide mentioned the Natives ate those and ground them for a tortilla like thing. I found a jar of that at the buckhorn and thought about buying it. If it hadn't been 10$ for a little thing of jelly I would have. What's it like? Anyone know?

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] dzioo I hope it was a great one.

And here's a few pictures to kick it off.

The Menger Hotel's original (sort of, it was only two stories in 1859) side. I was sadly NOT in this side. photo 100_3883_zpsjfqewvix.jpg

This is not the Victorian entry but it was the one I used since it was on the newer side of the hotel. photo 100_3863_zps5p6sq1r2.jpg

This is me on the second story of the Victorian Lobby looking down photo 100_3855_zpspkobe6r9.jpg

In the Menger Bar. I took this soon after feeling cold fingers playing with my hair. Note my back is to the wall....

These princess carriages were everywhere. photo 100_3887_zpscllcfnd8.jpg

You know what this is photo 100_3933_zpsxj5rapex.jpg

And the next are the four sides of the centaph, the empty 'grave' of the Alamo heroes.

Yay pictures!

Who is that standing in front of the Alamo 'no bones here'? Is that Daniel Boone?

Great pics.

I have never tried mesquite bean jelly. Don't know if I've even seen it around here - may be something more uniquely Texan (or I just haven't been paying attention).

We have a mesquite tree out front...

thanks.

It might be uniquely Texan, I don't know. I didn't realize mesquite looked so closely related to honey locuses. I'll have to see if they actually ARE related.

I would be curious to know what it is like.

I don't think I've had (or heard of) mesquite bean jelly...
It sounds pretty gross (then again, I do not have an adventurous palate)

and I love the pics
was that flag at half mast for the flood victims of the blanco river? or for some other reason? (if you know)

hahaha well that's just sad that you've never heard of it. I want to know about it. I should have bought it.

thanks

I don't know. I wondered that myself or if it's just always half mast for the Alamo victims. I didn't find out

I just looked it up

even barry who is one of the most adventurous eaters I have ever known thinks the idea of making a jelly from mesquite beans to spread on toast (like grape or strawberry jam) is just very.... ew. Mesquite is so linked with the BBQed, smokey flavor of meats in our minds... I guess we have food prejudice?

and wish me luck - today is THE DAY.
I go under the (wide awake) knife at noon

*eeeeee!*....

good luck with the surgery and better luck healing quickly.

I'm thinking the beans would taste utterly different than the burning wood.

Probably so... It's more of a desert tree, I think, so we don't have them or that jelly around here (that I have seen)

it definitely is a desert tree. so far no one I know in AZ or NM have heard of it either. Now I regret not buying it inspite the price

They're trying to make it a world heritage site so it's something they feel everyone should see. It was interesting if nothing else

If you get down that way, you should. I didn't care much for San Antonio but some of what I saw was really cool, especially the missions.
