Way to get caught off guard

So last night near 6ish, my callwave gets a call from Lane College and when I call back to set up the phone interview there is no one there. Fine, so I call this morning. Keep in mind I think I'm calling to SET UP the phone interview. I usually look up the school again on line before I spoke to them just in case they ask college questions and since I've applied to dozens of school I can't remember.

Guess what? Yeah, I get to speak to the head honcho NOW. No prep, I'm not even awake yet. I'm just calling to get a time. OH GOD. Yesterday I emailed them that I should be available in the summer like they wanted. THAT'S why they're so hot to talk to me. I meant June. They meant NEXT WEEK. I can't do that. I tell them that.

We still interview. This is the opposite of the other interview. It's all about me and NOTHING about them. Until she asks why I picked Lane and what did I know about the college. I'm blank. It's before 9 AM. I haven't had tea or breakfast. I'm still wet from the shower... I just wanted a phone time...I have to confess to being a moron who can't remember. I knew what she was getting at. I applied to a few historically black colleges but I can't remember if Lane is one of them. I can tell by her accent she is southern african-american but I didn't want to persume from that. Well it was and she obviously knows she's talking to a white woman. We discuss my time in Harlem and working home health in inner city Columbus.

She wants me out there NEXT week to interview and they're paying for it. I tell her that I have an orthopedic surgeon appointment for my ankle, explain that fiasco and the upshot is either next thursday or the one after that I'm going to Tennessee ... She was so polite I didn't know what to do. Florida doesn't have that cordiel southern atmosphere. It makes me nervous. Oh who thinks the rude yankee isn't going to do well....

lol wow! Good luck with that. That's so wierd and nerve wracking. It sounds like you handled it as well as could be expected though. Bravo to you. much better than I would have... even now. :)

Good luck with the interview. I agree with Lisa you handled it as well as could be expected. You'll be fine. It's so great and so promising that they are paying for the expenses. I'm so excited for you!

Ooh, that is a nasty loop to get thrown. That's unusual to get to talk to someone right when you call. Will you still be able to get down there, working around your ankle and trip?

yes that is unsual. I've never had it happen before. Don't know how I'll get there. I'll know more on Friday

*cheers* I'm so psyched for you! I know it's not like they've promised you the job or anything, but I'm a firm believer in signs, and if things went so well despite the lack of prep *and* they want to pay your expenses *and* they want you out there NOWNOWNOW!, well, those are signs to me that you were supposed to have this job.

I *hate* it when people do that. On-the-spot interviews are very unfair and if at all possible I tell people who try it that I'm on my way to an appointment and only had enough time to call to try to schedule.

The good news is that they wanted to see you in person and you have the chance to erase/supplement the phone interview. For my postdoc, I think my phone interview was meh but I know I'm good in person so I arranged an in-person interview and we know what happened-- they called almost right away and offered. Your phone interview must have been good enough and now you can bone up on Lane College and knock 'em out.
