Or in other words, tell me how badly I'm boned. A few weeks ago I tried to uninstall Yahoo Instant Messenger so I could reload it because my version was messing up. No problem, it did it but it couldn't reinstall so I did system restore.

Lately I've been having huge problems with slowness of the computer and it freezing ever time I touch the mouse to do anything. Got a new mouse to replace the nearly 4 year old one. No change. I have two anti-spywares on my computer that I run a few times a week. I have Stinger and AVG anti virals that I run at least once a week with no viruses ever found (Both are new and AVG updates itself at least twice a week).

Today I decide to try uninstalling YIM again. Now I get a message that says it can't uninstall because it can't open the install.log file. Okay so I KNOW it's damaged now but anyone know how, what to do if the anti-virals can't find anything. I mean if they could I could get the fixes from symantec.

Help?

Hmm. I've got good news and bad news for you.

The good news, doesn't sound like a virus, spyware, malware, or anything of the sort.

The bad news, doesn't sound like a virus, spyware, malware, or anything of the sort. ... Sounds more like just plain old buggy software. You tried to go through an uninstall process, which deleted the file that tells yahoo instant messenger what files it installed, but when you did the system restore, it didn't bring back all of the files.

So, your best bet, if you can, would be to reinstall windows and the rest of your software, and restore your files from elsewhere. This would probably clear everything up, as doing the "system restore" probably hosed up a lot more stuff than just yahoo instant messenger.

But, that's probably not a good option for you...

So, if you can't reload everything, try doing the following.

Open "My Computer", go onto the C: drive, and find the "Program Files" directory. In there, there should be a "Yahoo Instant Messenger" directory, or something pretty darned close to that. Wack it, then try to reinstall the program.

Also, you can bypass "Yahoo Instant Messenger" altogether. Try gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net) (look under the "Windows Port" page). It can talk to Yahoo Instant Messenger, ICQ, AIM, and all sorts of things, and you can login to your YIM account with it. Has the added bonus of being trustworthy software, there are no adverts, hidden bad stuff (adware/spyware) etc.
