I went to the Ohioana Book fest today. Unchaperoned. Totally dangerous territory.
I got up there and was instantly reminded that I've lived rural for a long time. I'm used to Jackson's free street parking and/or Athens's few quarters for the hour deal. I about fainted having to use a credit card to pay for my spot and that it cost 10$.
I couldn't visually see any of the restaurants within .3 miles of the Sheraton that I had googled before going and was a bit woozy from the parking and the hip killing me because the weather changed by 20 degrees but luckily one of the ones I googled was attached right to the Sheraton, Market 65. I got some veggie wrap. I could have had it as salad or wrap. I chose wrong. It was so over stuffed I ended up unwrapping it and eating it like a salad. It was good though, lots of leafy greens, chick peas, avocado, broccoli, edamames and green beans with garlic tahini. I loved the name of the Loki Falls wrap but it was salmon and unless salmon is thinly shaved and smoked I don't like it...
The festival was jammed into several conference rooms with the big one upstairs filled with authors. Too many authors for my wallet! I talked to many of them. I got snared by the romance authors and politely tried to get out of there (not my genre) but found tons of mysteries, horror, SF and fantasy/UF. I bought so many books. ALL for me! And one for mom for mother's day (that I'm reading already).
My best buying moments: 1. My first book was from John Scalzi. I had no idea he was an Ohioan. He was very nice to talk to. I asked him where did we buy this (as it turns out B&N was running that and you were funneled out to them so you only had to pay once!) and he told me then pointed to the other door or you can run out that way and get it all for free.
2. Several authors recognized my flag of Gondor shirt
3. Two recognized my own publishing house
4. One with an urban fantasy bounced in her seat when I bought her book. I felt bad really. I was the FIRST book of the day at 2 pm (it started at 10). I told her I have to do this myself in a month and that's my greatest fear. I'll sit there all day and no one will buy my book. She replied it's still fun to be here. Good to know.
I did sit in two panels, one on horror/supernatural and one on mystery/suspense. They were good and I really enjoyed myself.
I ended up getting a sugar cookie shaped like Ohio from the book fest people and one of the romance people had a neat promo cookie with lines from the book (wonders how much THAT cost)

I headed to the casino, won and lost and went to try their new brew pub but didn't get a brew. They were having specials on Purple Rains for Prince and I had to have that.(45 ml smirnoff no. 21 vodka, 20 ml sour raspberry liqueur, 20 ml blue curacao, 5 ml lime cordial, 180 ml cranberry juice cocktail). i got their take on a hawaiian pizza that had mango BBQ sauce instead of red sauce. yummy.
So all in all a good day. The only sour note was that the Sheraton had NO water fountains. I finally had to ask where to get a drink and told Starbucks but it was closed for some reason. I refused to go out to the food trucks for water.
