Happy Valentine's day
Feb. 14th, 2006 10:10 amWhile, it's not my fave day, I hope you all have a great one! And Maren sent me virtual chocolate to my LJ. THANK YOU! I think I'd probably like to celebrate Valentine's day in the old fashioned way. For about eight hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans (go ancestors go) practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February. It was a rite of passage dedicated to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his sexual companion during the remaining year. (so apparently sexual mores were never strong in my people. We were always these polyamorous people. WHEE!) Still....knowing MY luck with things like this, it would be the creepiest dude in the bunch that picked my name.
The Victorians practiced a form of this lottery except instead of a sexual partner (since we didn't have sex then apparently) you got a dance partner for the evening. I think my sorority did this one year...I probably was the one who instigated it but since my memories of any and all parties are vague at best I can't swear to it.
Any how, if you celebrate it, have a great day.
