STOP volunteering
Jan. 11th, 2013 10:06 pmWe're trying to get an honors program going at school. They're talking a joint project chemistry/biology/physics. Guess who's first to volunteer to make the class. WTF is wrong with me? At what point do I say 'wow I'm just too busy?" I'm not there yet apparently.
Today was long meeting (no really from 8 til 4) well various meetings in a room so hot I had to leave because it made me ill. The one thing that came out of it that was worrisome is something that on one hand I support on the other is going to cost the school hundreds of thousands and may just doom it. You may not know that but school get paid by enrollment (or at least they do here in OH). Have done for a very long time. They wanted to reverse it 100% and go by student achievement. They were talked out of it so it's 50/50 for now but soon going to 75% student achievement. Needless to say for us this is an issue. It's going to be an issue for ANY community college which are open admission. We have to take anyone. my school has 60% in developmental classes (i.e. middle school math/english) and only 20% will go on to graduate. We could end up with little to no funding. THis is more than a little scary. My question is can we now STOP bringing in the absolute worst students and concentrate on the good ones that way if we bring in 100 allied health students of quality, we graduate say 80 of those and that looks good as opposed to bringing in 200 students of zero quality and maybe get 80 graduates.
Also found out my friend's husband should have died. He had a dissecting aneurysm of the aortic arch. I have NO idea how he survived that. It's almost always fatal. Not sure how much brain damage (that's where the arteries to the brain arise) there will be (they think he'll survive now).
I did take the time I got ill from the heat and put it to good use. Office hourse set, syllabi printed, blackboard set up, connect set up. I'm ready to stroll in and just teach.
I am, however, convinced that no two faculty members can agree on anything. The sky is blue, no it's slate grey. Head desk.
Mom sounds horrible today. They told her the shingles vaccination might cause flu like symptoms. Bingo.
and I don't want to know what list I'm on but Hustler sent me a real deal off their magazine...
