Let's Pretend it's Music Monday.
Mar. 3rd, 2015 11:26 pmI had been too sad to even remember yesterday was monday. I'm not any less sad. Our president didn't make the meeting. I sort of know why but it's best to NOT put that out on the net (it's not that I don't trust you guys of course, but we all know MY luck). It might be Thursday. I hope it is. I won't be there. In theory I'm getting a root canal and a temp crown. In reality I'll probably be up to my eyeballs in ice and snow. I can handle the latter but ice, I do hate it so.
One thing I didn't think to mention yesterday was the contact email from the newish senior editor at DSP. It made me happy. She took the time to ask me what I really thought the editorial staff needed to help me with and what I thought I rocked. I didn't hesitate to say look at the sex scenes. I also sort of hinted around that maybe this should be transferred to the non-romance imprint but that wasn't addressed. I'm really debating on whether or not I should press the issue. Soldiers of the Sun isn't a romance. Like at all. Yes there's sex. Yes they're trying to figure out how to be a threesome. But at best the romance is a tertiary subplot. I didn't send it to the non-romance imprint because it was invite only. But now they're saying DSP authors can try that.
Here's the rub. That is a small imprint. Romance is far and away bigger sellers. So I run the risk of selling far less if I move it there. I'm already not going to be a big seller. M/M/M isn't a big seller because there's a fairly large section of readers who believe polyamorous people can't be happy and it can't last. Eye rolls. On the other hand, if people buy it thinking they're getting a romance and they get an action/adventure urban fantasy with only a hint of romance then they'll be disappointed. Sigh. I wish I knew what to do or even who to ask about it.
How Spock taught me to be a writer, another interesting writing article and tribute to Nimoy thanks to my friend ES.
So I have a fondness for classical music. I am enamored of violin and wish I had talent with strings (I so do not). I follow certain classical musicians and one of them is David Garrett (who is also easy on the eyes. Yum.)
I would like to find a subtitled version of this movie he's in as Paganini (one of my favorite composers). The vocalist is also outstanding in this.
Another one from this movie, The Devil's Trill. As legend has it, Paganini conspired and dealt with the devil to write and play (Paganini did both) this piece of music. That's how difficult it is. I think it's beautiful.
Another piece of sublime beauty Bach's Air on a G String
Nocturnes in general are some of my favorite compositions. Here's one from Chopin.
I rarely am a fan of overly religious music (except pagan so I guess we know what speaks to me). There are exceptions and a big one is the Ave Maria (hello Roman Catholic roots). Also I love Andrea Bocelli. Just listen to this, dont' watch. The person was obviously illegally filming it and doesn't know the first thing about holding a camera steady.
And since it is still winter, enjoy a little of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons: Winter
But also there is a movement amongst classical musicians to crack out the modern music and I'll be sharing more of that as I go.
It's not a giant step to do movie theme music like Pirates of the Caribbean
but how about Coldplay's Viva la Vida
or Guns-n-Roses's November Rain?
