I'm a local celebrity...kinda
Sep. 13th, 2015 10:20 pmBut before that, to all my Jewish friends, May this New Year be sweet, healthy and happy. L’shanah Tovah! Happy Rosh Hashanah!
So I went to the Paw Paw fest today. It was beautiful. A mix of sun and clouds and in the 60s. My type of weather entirely. And I was worried they wouldn't sell beer! on a sunday. I was wrong. I had Black Box's Belgian Seison
A Belgian style oatmeal rye brewed with pawpaw pulp and tellicherry peppercorns. ABV - 6.5% YUM and Thirsty Dog's Pawpaw Saison: A Belgian-style Saison with the fruit characters of pawpaw, apricot and pear. Spicy with lots of hop and pepper notes. ABV - 10% And yes that IS a high alcohol content. I also got the full color souvenier glass.
In fact, I think I spent much more on food than stuff this time (not that it was cheap), mostly because I know these vendors at this point and it's like I have everything I want...There were a ton more food vendors and they put them in one spot so that was easier. And there was more places to sit and lots of good music too because of the rain. Really there were only two bands schedule but I got to hear a ton of music because it was all rained out yesterday. Appachalian Intellect, Mamadrones and many others.
I wanted to get the goat curry but it was priced at sit down restaurant prices and I got like three items from that price so, I went with my usual gyro from Ali Baba's and I got an all beef organic dog from Mt. Airy farm (and the wind blew my condiments off :( but luckily not onto my white shirt). I got mini donuts on the way home but two of the best things were the brown sugar/vanilla organic ice cream smothered with paw paw ginger sauce (He gave me a sample. I had to go back for more) and the Filipino Halo-Halo. They took shaved ice and put it over sweet beans, tapioca pearls and purple yam with tons of young coconut then poured evaporated milk over it. Outstanding. I fell in love with these sorts of drinks in Orlando's Little Saigon and haven't had one in a decade. I could have had three more if not for the sugar.
I was recognized by the one woman selling Celtic items as I had talked to her a month ago in the Dublin Irish fest and by the Henna Fairy. All three of us may be on the Steampunk train next weekend and/or the steampunk spectacle the weekend after. See, local fame. In fact, in talking to the henna fairy about that and her dance troupe she made my flower WAY bigger than I paid for.
But the real local fame was with the guy I bought the paw paws from. We were talking and somehow it turned to where I was from. Turns out his daughter is a new student there in biology, well environmental science. I said well she might not have me but if she needs me, I'm the one with the anime all over the door and I run the club. Later I swung back that way and he waved me over. You just missed her (his daughter). She KNOWS who you are and can't wait to join the club. Let's just say he gave me more than a measly pound of paw paws (though I noticed after I sucked the fruit out of one there was worm holes on the other side....hmm extra protein.)
I did get a little labrinyth plate from the Celtic art lady and a dichroic glass wine stopper for mom and made sure I didn't buy a 25$ hand carved wooden ladle (even though I wanted it). I DID get the smoky chevre cheese from my favorite local vendors (but they ran out of spiceberry jam). And I got some paw paw ginger fudge.
I also wrote and wrote and wrote. LIke a dozen handwritten pages as I ate and listened to music and drank good beer. WHEE! I'm definitely the type of author who needs to unplug from the net to write.
silvrethorn &
evil_little_dog will tell you just how much I used to write in the 90s (we won't mention the quality to the work). I would do so well with a cabin in the woods.
at one point in the beer tent a 60 something old woman with cotton candy pink dreadlocks got me to sing this with her as the band covered it.
And here's my henna

Still wet with the glitter on it. I'll take a picture when it matures.
The only bad part of the day was having to pee like 5 freaking times in a portapotty and even those were clean (you have to love what is essentially a hippie festival).
And in non-fest news a friend sent me this link about teaching in Scotland hmmmm
