Mom decided she didn't want to take down more of the Christmas decorations (which I do feel guilty over) so we went shopping. I needed some diabetic vitamins (and can only find it at the Target) and I definitely wanted to go to TJ Maxx and Home Goods to check out the 50% off sale on the big Christmas baskets. I found one at TJ that I almost bought, nice tartan basket (I could store things in it) but the food in it was all crackers and breads so I was disappointed and left it (also it was 35$ still). I did find a glass candy dish (blue glass) filled with a candle so that'll be nice and a brontosaurus planter that I had to have. At Home Goods, I found two food baskets (that were 35$ together) and one of the baskets was a metal London themed one which will make a nice recycle bin in my computer room. Got 2 boxes of holiday cards for 5$ total. Nice.

Tomorrow I head home. It's going to be bitterly cold but it's the first week of classes I worry about a) not ready b) it's supposed to snow every day. Might be a short week.

Day 2 - In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

I have many favorite fandom memories but let me talk about my entry into fandom. Some of you know it but my first fanfic was written in 1977 after seeing Star Wars and falling in love with it. Of course that went no where but a few years later (about five) I was in Star Wars fandom which was just a newsletter, ditto the Mercedes Lackey fandom. But there was also Elfquest and Pern which were much more interactive.

There were holts and weyrs (respectively) where we had newsletters full of fan art and stories. Back in those days your stories were always illustrated and at the back of each newsletters were everyone's names and addresses so we could pen pal and colloborate on stories and art. Yes, we were much more trusting back in the 80s (and yes there were sometimes problems. I remember one fan who literally got in trouble with the feds because of mail tampering). It was great. I was involved with so many fan groups for both EQ and Pern until the latter was shut down by McCaffery in the mid 90s.

I am still friends with nearly a dozen people I met via EQ fandom. I've stayed at their houses and vice versa. It's probably the best part of fandom, the friends I've made. Yes many have faded away (more than I can even remember) but the ones who stayed, the ones who talk to me about every day life, those who beta read my professional work or just plain cheerlead me, they are special and I would be poorer for not having them. Back in the 80s before geeks were cool, it was life saving to have people like me to talk to even if you did have to write a letter and wait a week or two to hear back.
