I am within striking distance of the nano win. Maybe this will finally be one I finish which I haven't done in several years. Writing can be a lonely venture. Some of that is be necessity. That said, it would be nice to have someone close to write with. I might get that next year. I tried hard to get my original group together but no such luck. Another former member of the group is now a librarian here in town and she wants to make a local nano group. Crosses fingers.

Snippet - “She’ll come to the slam and she’ll drag you and Al too.” Howell thumped his head back against the wall.

“Not if you don’t want us there. Just say so but you’re not wrong. Grace will do that. I mean Al and I go to her art shows. How is this different?” Dan set aside his pencil and swiveled on his chair to give Howell more attention than he actually wanted.

“With her art, she can walk off, see what else is at the show and not have to listen to the critiques while staring into their eyes.”

“I suppose that’s true but didn’t you tell me you liked…what did you call it este somethings.”

“Eisteddfod.”

“Yeah, that. How is the poetry slam any different? Isn’t it basically an eisteddfod?”

Howell sighed heavily. “I guess but it’s different than me singing Men of Harlech and reciting some Dylan Thomas. This is my poetry and what if I suck?”

“Does your professor think you suck?”

“Not but it’s just a few weeks in. Give me time.”

“Don’t know what to tell you in that case. Let me write your poem and you can do my calculus three math homework.” Dan turned, picked up his text book and extended it to Howell.

“As if.”

“Also, what is Men of Harlech?”

Howell sat up straight and sang. “Wele goelcerth wen yn fflamio. A thafodau tân yn bloeddio. Ar i'r dewrion ddod i daro.”

“That doesn’t really help,” Dan interrupted with a laugh.

“It’s a song of war, of Welsh independence, sort of a big fuck you to the English. Dates back to the War of the Roses and Owain Glyndŵr tried to keep Henry the Fifth out of Wales. It was a seven year siege.” Howell skipped the fact that in the end it had been doomed. “We sing it a lot before football and rugby games now.”

“Ah, like we do the Star Spangled Banner, which, now that I think about it is also a big fuck you to the English.” Dan snorted.
