Everything is on fire and I am tired
Aug. 22nd, 2023 10:44 pmEvery. Single. Class. has multiple online glitches. Some I can figure out. Some I can work around. Some make me want to burn it to the ground and beg the Doctor to take me back to 1985. Not even getting into class conflicts and other things making me howl at the ceiling.
But no one wants to hear about that nightmare. I am crowd sourcing ideas right now. Even though I've yet to hear back from It Came From the Trailer Park III, the publisher has a call out for vol 4. And you can put in for a vacation. I have in my head two girls from a roller derby group like the Hell Betties or the Paranormal Posse (both of which aren't that far, I've hung out with the Betties) maybe on vacation, maybe out on a game.
Anyhow I'm looking for local cryptids that I can work into the story or local haunts. Anyone got anything good I can go research (other countries can chime in too) The only thing I don't want is anything based in Indigenous/African pain or culture. I figure those aren't MY story to tell. Thanks.
So fandom tuesday. I was wondering what makes the creatives out there go wild on one fandom but not another. That can't just be me, right? I am by nature poly-fandom. I don't even get the mono-fandom idea (no judgement, we're all different and I know I have a few Monos out there). However just because I love something doesn't mean I get all creative about it.
For example I absolutely loved everything I watched at my brother's. Sandman, Legend of Vox Machina, Wednesday, Lockwood & Co, Vinland Saga and yet none of those have grabbed me by the throat. Sure I could easily knock out some flash fic for them (and have in a couple of them) but I have zero long story ideas.
This is how it goes historically with me. Star Trek, Star Wars, Elfquest and Pern were my first big four. The first two (and Star Trek is my biggest, longest love) I don't write much. In middle school I did write Star Wars, utterly embarrassing Mary Sue self insert but I was 12. But that was it. EQ and Pern? I was in dozens of holts and weyrs for about 15 years back in the paper fandom days. God knows how much I wrote back then for them. Hundreds of stories.
Moving into the 90s and early 00s, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Fullmetal Alchemist, Saiyuki, The X-Files were things I couldn't get enough of, not to mention a dozen or more other anime/manga and yet I couldn't write The X-Files other than flash fic. Buffyverse I wrote 100s of stories, ditto FMA.
And then FMA/Buffy were my last fandoms for a while Love Lucifer, had no bunnies. That was the story of my life until 2019 and Prodigal Son and I started writing fanfic like I was on fire. I only slowed down a bit now because of the Owl House. But in less than 3 years I wrote 250 Prodigal Son stories, a half dozen novel length. In one year I've written 42 The Owl Stories, none tremendously long other than one at 25K.
There is no rhyme or reason to this. Mostly since the 21st century, it tends to be more character driven (and yes I have a soft spot for Cinnamon Rolls) I don't know really but I find it curious. How about you?
