This day passed so fast and I've accomplished...nothing. My cousin's wedding was today. Mom called me at 830pm and I thought wow that ended a little early but no, dinner was at 6 but at 830 they had only had the antipasti and were still waiting on the primo piatto so I guess the dinner is going...badly. can't wait to hear about that.
So I had in my head what I wanted to write for this but how about we do the Cliff Notes version: Do. Your. Research.
In a few of the livestreams of Hazbin Hotel, the creator admitted she hadn't fully researched various aspects of her show. At this point the show didn't exist yet but the web toon stuff did. And personally I find it disturbing to see this once something is published. I've seen it before, mostly though with wanna-be authors and fan ficcers (and the latter I give a pass since most of us are squeezing that in between jobs and families with no more plans other than to put it up onlnie)
You would think most of us realize we need to do our research. It's fine to get hit by inspiration and you're off to the races. But to not go back later to do the proper research especially when something is way outside your knowledge base is just bad. You'll get caught out. You'll probably be embarrassed. I've been there. I got caught once and almost caught with this last novel, NOT because I didn't do my research. In these cases my memory got jumbled and in the one that saw print, I put Arrigo's condo on the wrong end of the Vegas strip. I had been right past the place and thought I had it right but in doing the sequel I realized I wasn't and had to correct it in an author's note. That was embarrassing. How I messed up the one in the new novel I have NO idea. It's a place I've been to many times and someone I misplaced a cemetery and if I hadn't gone back up there it would have seen print. I would have been humiliated.
Do the research. You don't want to be embarrassed. You don't want to disappoint your audience. Worse, you could hurt a group if you get their details terribly wrong.
