Four Festivals in Four days: Day Three
Sep. 21st, 2024 10:19 pmToday's festival is the world's worst advertised festival. For context, the nearby town of Gallipolis (across from Point Pleasant WV) on the Ohio river was big in the Underground Railroad and has been celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation for over 100 years. About three years ago my university started taking part.
I only know this because I got a solitary email about it. I heard nothing on the radio/tv/saw flyers anywhere. It's rather embarrassing IMO. They had a senator (WoC) from WV talking when I got there ...to like 10 people. Geez. Now as I was going in a sea of school buses were leaving so was there a parade with marching bands? I'm guessing yes. There were even less vendors this year than last (no lie like 8)
But my only reason to be there was I knew the people from the John Gee historical center would be there. they had told me two years ago about two Black sisters who were chiropodists in Gallipolis from 1905-1957 and my own branch of medicine grew out of that so I want to include them in my study. They had a tiny thing on them with an article saying they went to the Reed School of Chiropody but it doesn't say where. They warned me there was very little on them. Boy were they right.
I went right over to my office and found...nothing. I have no idea where this school was because it wasn't coming up on bing or my pro level search engines. I did find a tiny bit out about the sisters Jeanette and Mayme Emerson because even though Bossard Library in Gallipolis is a small town library it has big city ambitions. EVERY newspaper from the the late 1800s on has been digitized. A thing I learned today is they didn't need social media back then. The newspaper did it for them. Throwing a party? It's in the paper. Coming back from vacation? It's in the paper....wow. I now have to find out what the heck the Social Twelve were because Mayme was big into it (I'm assuming it was a woman's club) I can at least get a picture of the sisters from the newspapers and I can drive my butt to their home which is still there and their graves are in the segregated black cemetery on Pine St.
And since I have NO idea where in time and space i am this week (just told my brother happy belated anniversary and he's like it's tomorrow dummy) I forgot my friday fandom so let me do that now.
I did write a story this week (and I'm almost done with the penultimate chapter of my monster
