Trying Positive Thinking
May. 26th, 2005 11:39 amWell I think the interview with the Arkansas School of Science, Math and the Arts went well, or at least not horribly. Thank God Mom actually found pertinent information on their website (which didn’t load well for me here with dial up) and answered the question is it a dedicated HS or a College (it’s a prep school for U of Arkansas) since that was the FIRST question they asked me and I knew what I was talking about. Thank God for the online teaching workshop I just did so I could say yes indeedy I’m working on learning how to go online and smooches to Durrillgraphics, I dropped your name into the conversation.
And hey, occasionally Dana’s a smart cookie. I had the forethought to look up ecology/conservation concerns in Hot Springs. I know that it’s a delicate ecosystem so I was prepared for the questions of a) why would you want to come here b) how would you motivate the students (field trip!!) And c) what class would you invent for us (why, conservation class, you have the native grass replanting of Searles Prairie, studies about how cell phone towers murder birds and the short stem pine studies in Ouachita Mountains and the Audubon ecology camp going on, it’s the perfect opportunity to get young minds involved in saving the planet before they become jaded)
The falling down of the interview: they asked about some kind of computer program I’ve never heard of and I just admitted I didn’t know what it was (not going to lie about that) and said my ecology studies were the old fashioned kind, you collect data by hand (and dropped the names of my instructors because they’re both names in the biz) and can you run SPSS? Yes ma’am I can. I didn’t say I suck at it, which I do but I’m sure my discomfort came through loud and clear. PLEASE don’t make me teach a bio-stats class. Have you team taught? Sort of. Me and Karl exchange classes and I do team work in medicine...
Have you ever taught an AP environmental class (did you see that on our online courses, yes and no, your program doesn’t load on dial up my friends)? Well obviously I haven’t. Is it on my resume? No, I didn’t think so. However I feel confident I CAN teach it. Have you taught microbiology? Is that a class? Oh thank you it was my all time FAVORITE class. Please please let me teach it. See me bouncing? (Yes, dear committee, while I haven’t taught it I do pitch hit it here at Nicolet and I have 10 years of wound care/infectious disease so I know micro). Can I teach zoology? Just finished a grad level comparative animal phys class so yes. Can I teach botany? Well I haven’t had it since 1988 but I did just do all those ecology classes so once I brush up on the cell stuff, you bet.
Have you mentored high school students? Uh, when I was a college student myself, yes. And actually I’m very active in online communities and I’m approached often by younger students for help so yes, I mentor online but not face to face (and yes, I have done this and YES I’m willing to do it for any of you on the list that want science help. I’m your girl)
I’ll know in a week if I got the second interview. Crosses fingers. On the upside, University of Rio Grande is calling my references so I’ve moved into serious contender realm. So hopefully I won’t be living in my old bedroom at mom and dad’s for very long. U of RG is probably a better fit to my skills. I know I’d like to live in the environs of ASMSA more. I’m also thinking as a prep school they have students with $$$ so maybe it pays better. Oooo I’m almost excited.

Date: 2005-05-26 04:56 pm (UTC)Also, I shall sear into memory the offer of science help! The kid will be in 7th grade next year, and I willingly admit that science is not my strong subject! Not that I actually *have* a strong subject, but it certainly isn't of the science nature!

This sounds really great :) I'm so happy for you.
