"Did I hear Tanyth?" a voice called out from deep within the rows of books, cutting off a reprimand from Tanyth.
"We're back, Caeles!" Arria bellowed.
"He's near sighted, sis, not deaf," Adan laughed.
A young man appeared from the shadows, blinking from behind thick glasses at the swath of light they stood in. Zvon had never seen a boy like this one. His skin was the color of the pearls he'd once seen around the neck of a dead woman. His hair was like a summer cloud and just as fluffy and curlicued. "Oh, someone new."
"Caeles, meet Zvon," Arria said, racing over to pull the boy across the room. He nearly lost the big book he carried.
Caeles smiled and stuck out a hand. Zvon raised his stump higher. The other boy smiled brighter and switched hands so Zvon could shake. Caeles skin was soft like a baby but his handshake was firm.
"You're going to love it here, Zvon," Caeles promised.
Somehow Zvon didn't doubt it.
