What a weird week for Fandom

First A03 is doing a massive update that is going to bork all our passwords (as if I don't have enough trouble with that as it is. So you're going to want to check your email is right because you'll have to send a request for a password change. Read more here

And then if you didn't see it today apparently Tumblr is now disallowing adult content. You can read more here I honestly never gave a crap about Tumblr but it's going to have an impact. As much as I'd like to think DW will be the new (old) face of fandom (they sure seem to think so) I'll be curious to see what is the the new face.

I've been too busy with grading and making exams to do anything else. I've been at it until 11 pm for the last 4 days. Sigh. I've been so busy I forgot to a) pay rent b pay bill c) sign up for my health insurance (thank god HR sent out a reminder email)


But I did write some of my spicy advent fic. 1800 words in just an hour and a half and no one's naked yet unless you count someone going barefoot. Side eyes them.


ETA - Does anyone remember if it was ever said WHY the cult of Ul-Thar wanted Connor besides him being the impossible child of two vampires? I know there was a prophecy but did they ever say what it was? I was looking around the transcripts but didn't see anything and my brain is mush anyhow now.

Bruh, I saw the Tumblr thing and immediately thought about how you can find porn of anything on Tumblr. I have an account that I haven't touched in even longer than LJ/DW, but it will for sure be interesting to see unfold. Thanks for the Ao3 warning. I'm currently working on an FMA chapter fic because I'm an idiot so will be good to have access to that.

Seriously. And apparently the algorithms for finding the porn is defective judging by other friends' posts. I just never liked tumblr's format so I never had one.

Yeah I'm really glad another friend posted about AO3 because I had no idea.

Yeah, the main reason I abandoned the tumblr was how unintuitive I found the place. It was seriously easier to just google "Ed/Ling Tumblr" and find shit that way instead of through the site or tumblr app.

Chapter fic is Al in Xing studying rentanjutsu in the post-mange 'verse bob_fish and I so frequently wrote in together. She has chapter one now and I'm working on chapter 2. I have notes/outline for 5 chapters, which should be the full thing. Why?!?

Exactly. I didn't like how responses (such as they were) worked etc. And I was backing away from fandom at that time anyhow.

On the subject of replies, I never got into Twitter either. I was briefly on FB, but have only used it for work purposes the last several years (sadly in order to post to the gym pages I need a personal account). I've been mostly engrossed in fighting and training in that time, but now that I'm approaching my retirement (2020) I'm finding myself drawn to fandom things again. I hadn't even watched tv/anime in years, let alone read or write fic. The D&D stuff has been a good addition as well.

Browsing various Twitter accounts (I'm not on Twitter, but there are a few people whose accounts I check out every now and then) I saw some pretty hilarious examples of what the Tumblr algorithm had flagged. Had a good morning laugh with them.

And seriously, you remove adult content or content that could possibly be considered adult (and something tells me LGBTQ+ material is going to be affected more than cishet material), what's going to be left? Especially when you consider how much fandom tends to like crackdowns on adult material...

I never liked that so much fannish stuff migrated to Tumblr, though, so I'm just glad if fandom is going to migrate away. I had a Tumblr account years and years ago, when I was active in other fandoms under other names, and I found it super unnavigable and really hard to have discussions in, and the fannish culture there felt quite toxic to me. And in later years I've found it's become even more difficult, when people have started putting their comments on the content into the tags and I don't know, you just can't find a thing there.

I've had similar progression rates with mine. Now they're naked, but goodness knows it took long to get there. Next we need to figure out what they're doing naked. I don't know why it's so difficult all of a sudden... Good luck with yours!

Oh no bet, LGBT will bear the brunt of it. Hell Amazon does that to books there (since I publish LGBT books I'm constantly infuriated by this)

And unsurprisingly it was the same thing here that caused FFN to ban it years ago, underaged sex. But policing that would take effort so ban it all I suppose.

You and I were of one mind about tumblr. I was going to get on back when LJ exploded and everything migrated to tumblr but I disliked everything about it so I didn't (and that was about the time I was getting serious about my original fiction and truthfully I only do fanfic a couple times a year now)

I hate twitter to be honest BUT as an author I have to have one (unless you're already a huge name like Nora Roberts and can get by without one). So now I have two since I have two pen names. Sigh. Ditto facebook but I like playing the games and wasting time. TOO much time. FB has disintegrated my will to write some times.

I'm glad you're getting back into fandom. I wish my local D&D group wasn't the same place as my local writers group (i.e. 45 miles away)

I can see Twitter being a useful evil for specific things. Instagram is my time waster. I never post, but scrolling all the content gets me all the time.

You live in the middle of nowhere as I recall so most things are probably 45 miles away, which I can't really imagine that well for daily living. #cityslicker

My understanding is that the update will only log out anyone logged in when it goes live, thus requiring logging in (with password) at a later time, no other password fuckery.
