A shitty week ends well
Mar. 28th, 2019 11:45 pmToday I got some good news. Can't make it public yet but it's very exciting and already exhausting me.
By some miracle I finished my damn copy edits, sent them in, packed my suitcase and GoogleEarthed the hotel (which is in a mall so food won't be an issue). It's actually less than 2 hours from here since it's on the eastern rim of Cincinnati, straight out on US-32.
So wish me luck on the authors' panels. I've never done this before. I've been to many as a reader. I want to do good and I think I will. Mostly I just want to have fun and forget for a weekend. I need that. My credit card might have other ideas.
The only thing I couldn't pull together were the nail wraps. the ehlers-danlos makes my nails suck so I was going to use fake nails. Well... they were so bad I couldn't manage them. Either my nails are super flat or these were arched unnaturally. There was no way I could glue them on so I'll keep my cool (and pricey) wraps for the pros and let them figure out a way to make it work. Read: don't buy cheap fake nails at Wal-mart. But I painted them sparkly bronze, that's steampunky enough.
I turned Slayer back in. I just couldn't handle it. 100 pages of how much Buffy sucked was too much. Honestly this book COULD have worked as Nina had reasons to dislike Slayers but it needed subtlety and this was troweled on with a snowshovel. But Fray came. I wanted to reread it (and mine are in storage). I had ideas for that.
I have to admit I'm old fashioned in some ways. I have a deep mistrust of uber for instance (not that it matters since I live where it ain't) At least cabs have some oversight. I'm not even that fond of B&Bs (because it seems creepy to stay in someone's house) AirBnB freaks me out.
this doesn't help
Kindred Spirits was interesting tonight. Out of all the ghost shows on, this one is the closest to paranormal investigations I've been part of but that's not what interested me (because seriously I'm not sure that this wasn't 100% faked) but it was in Maplecroft which I had always wanted to see. a) I had NO idea it was this large b) had no idea they were opening it to the public. For those who don't know Maplecroft is the mansion on the hill Lizzie Borden and her sister lived there until LIzzie died (her sister moved out after a falling out)

Date: 2019-03-29 06:40 pm (UTC)I also don't use uber (or any other similar vendors) - at least in the US. They seem to skip out on a lot of - like you said - oversight and fees, etc. I feel awful for the cab drivers - for us it's also a lot of immigrants who become taxi drivers and it's taking a job away from them.
Anyway, I guess I can also be fine with cabs because they are a lot in our area and don't charge the way DC does - which is soooo expensive. *shrugs*
That article is creepy and doesn't help! :S

Date: 2019-03-30 04:09 am (UTC)Even worse at least in NYC (and maybe in other big cities) those cab medallions are (or were) such big earners that those people who bought them spent up to a million dollars and uber is killing them.
That said I've never had luck with cabs (or buses, frankly I don't do good for some reason with mass transit, something always goes sideways
