Day one done and 15 weeks more to go
Aug. 20th, 2019 12:02 pmIt was as bad a first day as I expected. The a/c is broken so the rooms are stifling. All the professors are depressed. NOT ONE book order was right here in math/science. NOT ONE. So we were also furious.
I'm trying to get thru to my landlords about all the problems. They aren't answering and their mailbox is full. Special. Fine, I'll put it in writing.
A friend living on the Athens side of things here in SE Ohio ALSO had to wait 3 weeks on internet and that wasn't my company. Everyone keeps telling me to switch and it's like you don't understand.
I have good news. My Christmas story will be the 2nd in the advent calendar. Sweet.
And of course there's this news AO3 wins a Hugo. Honestly I can't tell you how proud I am to be part of this. It feels validating. Even though fandom can be a contentious nightmare filled with opinionated assholes (I try not to be but I'm sure I've failed from time to time) but it's such an important outlet. I'm old enough to remember the times where you couldn't admit you wrote fanfic if you went pro, where you had to dump all traces of your fannish self from online. (Hell I'm old enough to remember fandom before the internet so there's that).
I'm glad to see we no longer have to hide in the dark with it. So many of my friends here have a little hand in this achievement so smile.
I'm getting closer to finishing my Buffyverse WIP (now closing in on 75K OMG why). I probably should think about putting a cover on this thing.
And now I'm off to day two's lab in a room that's 90 degrees. I actually wore a sleeveless shirt and a skort. That is WAY more leg than I ever want to show students (don't look directly into the varicose veins, my pretties, you might go blind) but it was that or faint.

Date: 2019-08-20 07:41 pm (UTC)I can relate to the internet service providers to a degree. For the longest time, where I lived only had one option and it took forever for other providers to get in to my area and even now, the coverage with different service providers is rather spotty.
That's cool about AO3 winning a Hugo.

Date: 2019-08-20 07:58 pm (UTC)They're going to have to stop saying 'not enough people out there' and do something because if we're expected to be connected....
isn't it though?

Date: 2019-08-20 09:30 pm (UTC)I've seen this comment floating around re: AO3 (for which I share your pride).
Employer: You say in your resume that something you wrote won a Hugo?
Me: Yes.
Employer: Can I read it?
Me: ...No.
