Paw Paw Festival
Sep. 14th, 2019 10:01 pmAfter a rough morning, I decided to go to the Paw Paw festival after all. Once there I was reminded of why I didn't go for years. One it's 15$ to get in which seems a tad pricey to go to a craft show with music. Then again I suppose they are paying the musicians so...
That wasn't my problem. My problem was I had no idea you couldn't bring in ANY bags (turns out it is WAY down on the web page under security in tiny print) and that included purses. I watched them turn away parents with diaper bags. All I had was a small purse and they tried to make me get out of line that I was already standing in for nearly 20 minutes and I SNARLED at them, my insulin is in here. I'm NOT carrying my needles in a fucking clear plastic bag (which they wanted 5$ for) and if I go back to my car to drop off my purse, I'm just plain leaving and you lose my entrance fee. Check my bag if you want.'
The guy back pedaled so fast I'm surprised he didn't leave the state (I am very good at being intimidating and I know how to pitch a fit). Later in the beer tent I saw a sign 'no racism, no homophobia, no sexism at this event, let's be awesome.' And my thought it your entrance practice is inherently sexist. For one you're making it possible for women with small children to attend (and there is an entire kids section of this thing) because do you have ANY idea what in the hell goes into bringing kids along especially when it comes to bottles and diapers etc? No, I bet you don't because I'm betting a man made this rule. Men have pockets. A lot of women's clothing does NOT. Many of us need to carry more than a wallet in a pocket.
Search the damn bags if you're worried. That's what they do at the Irish fest in Columbus. I mean you couldn't possibly slow things down even more. It's already a half hour to get in.
I went right to the beer tent because I needed it. L. texts me she's on the way to meet me (I didn't realize that my text to say I was going didn't send for the 40 miles TO the place, no it waits til I get there b ecause my phone is stupid). I got both the sasquatch pint glass and the little paw paw taster glass because I need two beers at this point. Over the course of the festival I had the Milo Gose Pawpaw Fest beer, which is a sour fruited gose. (6.6% ABV) by Devil’s Kettle which is local. I've become a huge fan of sour fruited beers and this was fantastic. ANd I had the Paw Paw Milk 2019 IPA - Imperial / Double Milkshake by Eartworks brewery. I don't usually go for IPA as I tend not to like the hop forward bitterness but this was really very good, not bitter and more my usual ABV (9%) and a Paw Paw wa wa beer, a paw paw/watermelon beer, less ABV than I usually drink but this was just fantastic, sweet and tasted like watermelon with no bitter after taste, easily the best of the bunch by North High brewery out of Columbus.
Honestly none of the music stuck with me. I did have fun with the vendors. I made some paper infused with blueberries. I'm interested in papermaking but boy did this stink. It was fun though. I bought some things, a lovely purse with a tree of life on it, a huge canvas bag that was tie-dyed (by a group of Down Syndrome people and it benefits a down syndrome charity), a pair of leather earrings and a tree of life pendant (yes I'm enamored with tree of life art). I also got a fudge taster pack, paw paw ginger, chocolate spicebush and sassafrass (OMG!) I even found spicebush iced tea. And oh I found artemisa absinthia which I needed for my student's research so a little absinthe plant is on the table next to me.
Speaking of food I ate up all kinds of food truck food! I got a reuben dog from Dogs Gone Wild, cellophane bean noodles with paw paw and a paw paw egg from from Tasty Indonesia, a paw paw sauced gyro from Ali Baba's and I wanted something from Holy Guacamole because they are awesome but the line was long and I was hot. I ALMOST got the paw paw cotton candy but 6$ seemed steep.
Yes I WILL link to some of my favorite artists and share pictures of my new treasures but not tonight. I'm exhausted. I was also a tad worried. IN spite of three beers, tea and a refill at the water station (which was basically hose water) and being there for nearly 5 hours (my liver needed to walk it off) I didn't have to pee so I assumed I was seriously dehydrated and was getting headachy because of it.
I'm still a little tired and boy is my back killing me But it was fun.

Date: 2019-09-15 03:11 am (UTC)Also also: men with small children presumably can't attend this either, because unless one is wearing cargo pants and even then I am doubtful, it is not possible to carry sufficient bottles and fresh diapers and whatever without a diaper bag
Also3: many disabled people can't attend this either because, as a case in point, like fuck am I going anywhere without my inhaler and a lil bottle of ibuprofen, like fuck is any diabetic going anywhere without insulin and emergency noms, fewer people go places with sports bottles than ought to but eventually one gets sick of holding those in one's hand or dangling them off one's wrist strap…
Also4: hidden and in tiny print? when at least half their attendees will want to bring in a bag of some description??

Date: 2019-09-15 05:24 pm (UTC)It wasn't as easy to find much about it. I don't know anything really about the Romuva religion including that name until today so thanks. It was interesting (and it reminds me later once I'm done with test making and grading to ask you about the proper terms for grandma in Latvian)

Date: 2019-09-15 05:02 pm (UTC)I'm glad you stood up to the guy, and I'm glad you had fun even though you'd been confronted with that at the start.
I had to look up pawpaw (papaya?) because I thought this was some kind of dogs and cats, etc thing when you first mentioned it, lol!!
