Reading Wednesday
Nov. 20th, 2019 10:23 pmThanks to all the people helping to find angsty 80s stuff. You reminded me of things I forgot and introduced me to ones I've never heard of. I appreciate it, yinz. Thanks so much. Truth be told I'm just pissing about making a playlist for Prodigal Son (Shut up ELD!) but it would also work for one of my novels.
Today was so depressing at the faculty meeting. What they did to us has backlashed and no one wants to come to the school (shocker) so even our good majors are losing students. So we need new faculty to fill in holes but I feel like we're lying to them as we interview them. Sigh.
And hey look I actually have a reading Wednesday! OMG these are the first books I've finished since October (did you notice no books listed in Oct. Won't be any until the end of December I don't think). TOo much work, too much depression but I actually finished TWO.
The last book I read
Ai no Kusabi Vol. 2: Destiny by Rieko Yoshihara. I came to this one via the anime. It's actually from the 80s and is at the beginning of the yaoi movement. That said this was translated a decade ago back when it was more likely to just translate without attempting to make it sound good in English. ALso it's not tremendously well written (I suspect most of the people reading this are there for the 'pretty men together') It also has some horrific ideas in the world building (including limiting female births and women basically being breeders, that the abundance of men is why they're gay, that the blondies are genetically the best) and the fact that Riki is only 15 when he's selling himself and ending up in dub-con with an older man....
Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1) by Tamsyn Muir Lesbian necromancers in space. Does that grab you? This is seriously the weirdest damn thing I've read in eons. Warren Ellis said Muir was insane. And that's Ellis saying that. It's world building is strange and expects you to just figure it out. If you don't like the mix of SF and magic you won't like this. I thought it was a great deal of fun and Gideon and Harrowhawk are unlike characters I've seen in recent years. Looking forward to more.
What I am reading now
Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire It's a portal novella. I didn't now this was the second in a series but they're also stand alones (and can I just say I'm happy to see the rise of the novella!) Jacqueline and Jillian are identical twins with just the worst parents, very rich, had kids as a status symbol and forced their ideals on them. Jacqueline is the 'girl' very girlie and frilly not allowed to be dirty etc. Jillian, because they didn't have a son, is the 'boy' (really strange to have such rigid gender roles in this day but that's sort of the point) so very tom boyish. They find a portal to another world in a trunk. So far it's interesting but also told from a very distant omniscient narrator.
and Riptide by Preston and Childe which isn't in the Pendergast universe. It's about a treasure island (sort of like the oak island treasure hunt) and the owner of the island lost his brother there. I haven't gotten very far.
What I'm Reading Next I'm going to tackle The Walking Dead graphic novels
30740 / 50000 words. 61% done!

Date: 2019-11-21 03:06 pm (UTC)I've never read anything by her before but when someone gets that many nebula nominations you have to take notice. This is a very strange story but I'm enjoying it

Date: 2019-11-23 07:56 am (UTC)I just checked Goodreads and turns out I marked it to read all the way back in January. I think the cover caught my eye but I never got around to reading it. Your description makes me want to pick a copy up sometime -- magic and SF? Count me in :)
