How not to get out of a faculty meeting
Jan. 10th, 2020 10:52 pmtrip and spend the morning in the ER. My right arm and knee are bruised. My cheek is swollen, my left arm isn't broken (they think, they're going to call back later but it took the brunt of it), slight dislocation of the wrist (I have a fun sling and the left knee is the size of a grapefruit. Wheee
I did go in for the second half of the meeting which wasn't much and then to the bar to bitch about how much this place sucks. If our new hire doesn't wonder what the fuck he's gotten into well then...
While I was in town I bought a new TV. It feels like I bought this three weeks ago that's how long this day has been. I regret my purchase. I was limited in what to get. It's another Samsung but way less big than my previous so I'm hating that. And I can't wall mount so I had to put it on the table which is actually my preference. BUT they had zero pedastel types so it has these stupid feet (which were a bitch to get on). It doesn't fit my ancient stand. It does fit on the rickety horrible metal stand I have but I can't trust that so now I have to get a new fucking table for it.
And then because everything is streaming, my dvd player can't be plugged in. Oh I can get RCA to usb converters which I'll have to do. In theory I now have this TV hooked up to my wireless so maybe I can stream BUT on the other hand I own dozens of DVDs. I like them. I'm not about to rebuy all this shit. so I need to get that working.
God I hate the rapidity with which tech gets 'old.'
Every part of me hurts. I'm cranky. I hate this new tv (but I don't want to return it for a bigger one since now ALL my info is programed into the damn thing and they'll end up throwing it out rather than restocking it. I guess I can learn to get use to it. I honestly thought my other one was a 43 inche too but it must have been a 50...

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've briefly interacted with and friend/follow them
Which I did. However if someone from the challenge is popping by I'm usually less curmudgeonly (though I'm often injured) and I love talking to people so feel free.

Date: 2020-01-11 11:41 am (UTC)I cannot even begin to contemplate streaming when I would have to get several services with maybe - maybe - more than one on each. So I resort to those I'm familiar with and don't even try to connect with the new stuff; beyond a few fanvids, here and there. There are a couple I've taken to, but DVDs are very difficult or impossible to get and they are all old shows too anyway.
The DVDs I have are becoming difficult to replace, as I am finding with my DS8 set, or too expensive now that my funds are getting more and more restricted. And of course my eyesight and my weirdly-wired brain are restricting the amount of reading I can do; which is distressing all of itself.
And yet I feel not depressed; but tired.
On the plus side I am listening to more and more music programmes which mix the familiar with the new; unheard, or slightly bizarre. And that is proving enriching, almost as much as books used to be.

Date: 2020-01-12 03:00 am (UTC)Most of us (Americans at any rate) still have some satellite/cable company and that encompasses a helluva lot of shows. As for me I can get the dvds still (which boggles the mind, they still release them for nearly every movie but finding a player is getting harder) To make mine work with the new tv is an 8 dollar item. I'll have it as soon as I sit my butt down to order it

Yeah, same here. It makes me less and less willing to buy anything because why would I if it's just going to be obsolete five minutes from now anyway?

Date: 2020-01-11 02:59 pm (UTC)The TV situation seems a nusiance, too. I'd probably order one to my liking online and use the one you just got as a back-up or so... fingers crossed whatever you do works out well for it, particularly the plugging-in-situation. We have HDMI at about anything these days, computer and TV screens alike, which is great insofar as it's now so much easier to plonk your notebook into the TV. I haven't seen RCA since at least a decade, more likely two... but also no screens with USB ports only.

Date: 2020-01-11 03:05 pm (UTC)Well since I now know that they're very likely to throw the TV in the dump than restock, I'll keep it. I can always put it in another room later (I have a couple other major expenses coming up so I can deal with it)
That DVD player probably IS 20 years old. I can get converters easily enough. Though my 4 year old tv did have RCA hookups. this one has a USB, two HDMIs a lan and an old antenna hook up now that that's become popular again

Date: 2020-01-11 06:37 pm (UTC)As far as tech goes, I still have a VHS hooked up. I'm too cheap to rebuy those movies (even if all of them had a DVD/blu-ray/watevs release, which plenty don't).

Date: 2020-01-11 08:49 pm (UTC)Yeah I have a VCR too and some tapes though I converted some of them (not exactly legal but I did buy the tape so I don't feel so bad)
