The Health Department
Jul. 23rd, 2020 10:11 pmA place I could probably work if teaching goes tits up. I have two former students working at them with just a b.s. but that's not why I'm talking about them today.
We had a big meeting for 2 hours with them about being face to face in a month. Personally I feel much better. If I can get the big room I won't need to record any lectures (I still am) and if I make them wear gloves/mask in lab I can work them closer than 6 feet so I don't have to COMPLETELY redo my labs. What a relief. So thank you for the health department for this info (which of course could change if we keep tracking upwards) and thanks to Gov. DeWine we have a mask mandate. He's not my gov by my choice BUT he's a republican NOT towing Trump's line. He has treated this virus seriously since March. Trump says no more testing, he went on TV and was tested live. Georgia's gov. is suing his own cities who mandated masks, my gov is like wear a goddamn mask.
Probably going to buy a Star Trek Mask and a Valentine Wolf one in addition to the ones I have (they're a bit pricier but money is also going to charity). After watching the guy lecture to use for 2 hours in a mask a coworker actually asked how can students hear us if we have on masks? OMG it's a MASK not a ball gag for god's sake.
The guy from the health dept. also had this to say, most people are not used to science unfolding in front of them. They don't know the scientific method. So when things change, they don't realize we're adjusting for new data. They think we don't know what we're talking about. That's so true and it hurts us but that's how science works.
In other news, my mother is having surgery (carpal tunnel) tomorrow so kind thoughts if you'd please. And for some reason I can't grasp Lucky Uncle's doc is dragging their heels on his surgery. He's not even being evaluated until Monday. I'm terrified it'll be SO much worse by then.
And in other news I have better things to spend my money on but my GOD I want this SO DAMN MUCH

Date: 2020-07-24 01:07 pm (UTC)Don't get me started about how many people are apparently ignorant about so many things about the virus, including how the scientific method works. I blame the media in part to be honest and the overall campaign to dumb down scientific news by taking the sensational headline approach. I don't think the media is solely to blame but considering that'sh ow most people get their scientific news from, I think it's not been helpful in ensuring that people understand how science works.
Then again I think most people are just dumb in general.

You're right, the media plays a huge and highly biased role in this which then plays into our biases. But I still don't get how being told to wear a mask makes you so mad you piss on the floor of a Verizon store while your pockets are filled with shoplifted stuff (no lie, this happened this week)

Date: 2020-07-24 06:25 pm (UTC)I think with some of the "no-mask" people who make a public scene it boils down to a few things:
1. They are desperate for their 15 seconds of fame.
2. They think they're making a political statement of some sort.
3. THey've bought into the conspiracy theories that are spreading like wildfire.
4. They are behaving they way are due to either mental illness or substance abuse.
It then doesn't help that you have a president and other members of a political party that are doing their best to stir the pot as well but spreading lies and false claims.
