I’ve been thinking about endings a lot this past week and a half.
Angel, of course, is passing rather bitterly to most fans. I’m not going to say much about that. I haven’t watched half the season due to sheer lack of interest. I’ve heard what happened and I’m not impressed. That’s about all I’m going to say other than it’ll be interesting to see what happens if Joss really was serious about taking it to the big screen which could either be really good or really bad (see X-File movie, which I hear tell there’ll be another). Angel, like Buffy, had joined the rank of the X-Files for me, dead and gone before it was off the air. For me Angel ended with Home, Buffy with Gift and X-Files some three years before it finally whimpered off and died.
I’m more concerned with the other people I said good bye to this week. I’ve talked a little about Frazier but I’m coming back to that. 20 years. I wasn’t even driving a car when I ‘met’ Frazier. I was in junior high. I watched him for years on Cheers even though by the end (like with so many shows) it was only sporadic. At the time I even thought I’d be a psychiatrist (not because of Frazier but because the two fields of medicine that held any interest to me were psychiatry and medical examiner, go blame Quincy). I watched through undergrad, needing those moments of laughter to break up the stress of working on three degrees at once while working three jobs. They say writing humor is the hardest thing to do, like wise with acting it. For my money having done both that’s true but Kelsey Grammar made it look easy.
When Frazier first started I didn’t want to watch it. I was never much into spin offs (law and order being a recent exception). The last few seasons of Cheers had been dull and after 11 years I thought it was time to go (even though the ending of Cheers was how I like them, well, okay 90% of the ending was dull but that last 10% where we know Cheers would always be there serving up drinks, that kind of hopeful I like). I was irritated they gave him a sudden family he never had. It took two years before I watched, stubborn woman that I am. As soon as it hit syndication I saw them all. I watched religiously until about two years ago after the marriage when it just wasn’t funny any more. But for most of those 10 years, Frazier was hysterical. The comic timing of Frazier and Niles was priceless as was Martin’s horror at the two prissy boys he had fathered. Daphne and Roz are some of my favorite female characters (Roz especially). So even though I’ve only watched it sporadically in the last few years I’ll miss something I had grown up with.
And to top it off I lost Angel and Lennie Briscoe in the same night. I was probably even more attached to Lennie. 12 years of watching him on Law and Order. Now, I’m used to losing cast members. It’s par for the course on that show, especially the assistant D.A. position but the ascerbic Detective Briscoe with his one-liners and puns never grew stale. I watched for the usually amazing story lines and fine acting (as opposed to shows I’ve watched for the beefcake of which there isn’t much on Law and Order...on any of them).
My favorite part of Law and Order is the Order part. I’ve loved cop shows from my earliest memories (one of my earliest crushes, Kent McCord on Adam-12). The law part I’m less interested in. I enjoyed the partnership Lennie’s brought to the table with all of his partners. I know I’ll still get to see him (no I’m not talking about the endless supply of L&O reruns). Lennie’s character has been transferred to the latest L&O spin off which I think is entitled "Trial and Jury" but I’m not sure it’ll be to my taste being more a lawyer show than a cop on.
I think my real disappointment is that he’s being replace by Dennis Farina. Nothing against him, I like him actually but I wanted a female detective for a change. We haven’t seen one outside of the captain on L&O (the spin offs yes). Or at least wanted to see someone a little younger than Farina. I guess Ed is still the hot headed younger cop of the partnership. I’ll still be watching. I was watching before Lennie and I’ll probably be watching until the end.

Date: 2004-05-21 07:22 am (UTC)Im not overly upset at the passing of Angel as this IMO has been its weakest season, and while it may have been better next season, in all likly hood it wouldnt have been, I think the WB demanded changes killed it in the end, certainly not commercially as rateings wise this was one of its most successful, but artisticaly, yea, it was like watching a turgid supernatarul MacGyver.

I wish they'd put it back in syndication here in FL
Ah well.

I'm going to miss Niles soooo much. He reminded me too much of my first real boyfriend, not in the fastidiousness or the money but in the cluelessness of "actual life".
And Martin. What a terrific actor. He could say more with an eyeroll.
And Eddie; dear, sweet, evilevilevil Eddie.
