Italian Delis and microbursts
Aug. 10th, 2021 06:34 pmWe went to Federio's the Italian deli in Steubenville which has been there since 1930. I got some pasta, calabrian peppers and a huge thing of anchovies and some Taralli cookies. The provolone stuffed olives I got weren't that good though. The cheese had gone gritty. Sigh.
We went for lunch and then planned to go to Kroger's went the microburst happened. It was blowing rain straight through the closed doors and tore up trees and the torrential rains last for nearly an hour.
One of the things I wanted to say during my writerly ways but didn't was this, how much realism do you want in your books? I mean we all know that there is a bit of fantasy and/or wish fulfilment in fiction but how close should it be?
For me it needs to be believable I guess. And I have to like the characters A LOT before I'm willing to go to the suspicion of disbelief mode. Example two cop shows. Rizzoli and Isles : Isles constantly doing autopsies in dresses and heels was one of the reasons I noped out early. Also I didn't like their characterizations of those two characters. Prodigal Son: There is a string of OMG really moments (Malcolm falling out a 3 story window without serious injury) but since I like the characters I look past it.
I just finished a novel that made me think of this where the beat up Smothered psychic protagonist finally stands up to her insanely religious overbearing mother the day she dies (the bullet was meant for the protagonist according to her visions) and suddenly to her rebellion is being rude assed to everyone. She's mad when they point out moving back into the murder house and painting over Momma's blood might look bad, she's so repressed that going to Walmart and buying a night gown equals 'evil thoughts' and in spite of multiple visions about her death, never reports or does anything about the repeated break ins at her place. Can you imagine what my review of this will look like? You can imagine I'm not getting more of this because it's so unbelievable (especially crime scene tape being down in just a few hours. Yeah it could happen but usually it stays up until the autopsy)
The parents just got high speed interne. Yay for them.
And oh, can we just say it. FANFIC is important to fans. We will notice when you steal it like this romance author did
Speaking of fanfic, I'm reading an ARC I won that I swear is a bad Sherlock Holmesian AU of a Black Butler fanfic. The lead is 19 but has to be carried around by his butler (and he is the size of an 11-12 y.o. child) and acts like he's 4 when it's bath time. I'm 32% into it and he's thrown like 4 fits about taking a bath and him worse than mentally disturbed genetically enhanced monster-soldiers are 'fat people who might eat his dessert' (even if that was meant as a joke...)
