Challenge #3

I was going to pass this by. I spent so much of 2022 angry. Honestly I never have much issue sounding off. I didn't want to get into it much but then here we go again this morning.

I really want the homophobic/racist/misogynistic fans to just fuck straight off at this point. It's a problem in most fandoms but the one that gets me is Star Trek.

HOW can you love Star Trek and be a hater? I DO NOT get it. I'm not denying it's there. I know saying it isn't helpful ( because we're getting that on ST fandom too, quit asking so surprised but you know what, no I AM surprised because this was the most woke show in the 60s for the most part.)

Star Trek gave us women in the command structure. It gave us characters of color, it gave us enemies of America (Think about what Russians were to us in 1966), it WOULD have given us a woman as second in command had the censors not had a tantrum. First interracial kiss (which okay wasn't a great kiss and the censors insisted on it being more or less coerced) one of the first lesbian kisses, it has always been about pushing boundaries so why are throwing fits now?

Deep Space Nine turned THIRTY (sob) this year and not only did we have a Black captain he was a great dad. Voyager came soon after with a female captain. Now we have Asian captains, Black women, openly gay and binary characters and people are losing their damn minds. Just stop.


Worse we have fans going after actors because it's not THEIR choice and it's getting very ugly when they are bullying the shit out of young actors. No one deserves this. We shouldn't need more season actors, Paramount, Disney etc stepping in to protect these actors and more correctly actresses (because the guys don't get it nearly bad enough). How many have been forced off social media.

For example, all the hate leveled at Death on The Sandman. How dare she be a woman of color? Yes I love Death. I loved the pale gothy look but I could have cared less about her being cast as a WoC and when Neil Gaiman defended the casting, fans ripped him up one side and down the other. Go woke go Broke became a chant for these fans. So Gaiman (let me have his patience) kept posting very 'woke' shit from the 90s from the comic book.

Fans came in droves for She-Hulk. Now I haven't seen it or the 'bad cgi' (which could be true) but they really hate seeing female characters get ANY screen time. I have no idea where it comes from. She-Hulk debuted in 1980, Scarlet Witch in 1964, Mz Marvel 1968, Black Widow also 1964, Sue Storm in 1961. Women have ALWAYS been part of the MCU. Now we have fans screaming down with the M-SHE-U. How the fuck threatened are they by women?

Go ahead! I think it's wild that Star Trek has that problem. I mean Kirk/Spock were the original slash fanfic couple. And like you said it broke and is still breaking barriers, but, god forbid there's anything other than a white cishet male at the helm or people lose their shit.

I always say that for all of the talk of Hollywood being liberal, the film and television industry is actually one of the most conservative industries around. And until they stop seeing their main demographic as 18-25 year old males, a lot of what we see isn't going to change.

I think many of them are either afraid they will be typecast and won't be offered certain roles (like the hero in an action movie or a romantic lead in a straight rom-com). They'll be offered the expendable gay (in the action film) or the gay best friend in the rom-com.

There are a lot of people who want to enjoy media that cater to their tastes without ever having any of those tastes be challenged or otherwise negatively portrayed. Those people always cite "good old shows" that were extremely boundary-pushing as of they did no such thing and you just want to explain to them that they were not watching the show carefully enough, or they wouldn't use it as an example.

I know, right? It's like you couldn't have been watching that closely or your memory was faulty (going back a few months ago to watch Emergency! from the 70s for the first time in at least 25 years I was like wow, this was more diverse than I remembered)
