Happy Star Trek Day
Sep. 8th, 2023 11:45 pm
I should have watched Strange New Worlds to celebrate but I was on the phone with ELD...and started feeling awful. My blood sugar was very high, like you better take insulin or go to the ER high. (I chose the former as I know how to handle this) I couldn't figure it out. Lunch was greek yogurt and a cheese/pickle sandwich, not high sugar (and my usual) and then thought well you had right rice for dinner, a lot of it. It's a chickpea rice substitute. Chickpeas are often suggested for diabetics.
I never thought about it and I should have looked. Didn't. It's like 8 grams less sugar than rice. Well fuck. I'm not sure WHY it has this much sugar in it (something i'll need to look into before I play with chickpea flour homemade pastas). Guess the food pantry is about to get a lot of bags of right rice...
So I'm feeling weird again (probably overdosed the insulin which means now I'll NEED sugar, it's a fun game to play). In the meantime have the fandom recs I've been stockpiling all week. I didn't write a 6 word challenge this week but I did start a "little" sicktember sick fic for The Owl House that's now over 7K (shut up ELD)
Title: Burning From Within
Summary: Hunter hasn’t been this sick in a long time but at least this time he’s not left to the ‘tender mercies’ of his uncle.
Notes: Written for the sicktember prompt #17 magical remedy/healing potion.

Date: 2023-09-09 10:18 am (UTC)Sorry to hear about the blood sugar high.
I was quite surprised to find out how many carbs legumes actually have, although the glycaemic index/load differs vastly depending on how you have/use them, obviously. I'm usually using plain legumes as substitute instead of XY pasta or rice as the carb balance is so much better, preferably also some I soaked and cooked myself (and then usually freeze) as there's also a surprising amount of sugar in any preserves. It takes some getting used to, but plain kidney beans or chickpeas have become well-working substitutes for rice or pasta for me. Or, when cooking for the two of us, I'll have a very small serving of wholegrain rice or pasta (spelt pasta, too, as I can't eat wheat) first and a second, larger helping with beans after, if I'm having a craving.
(I hope I got the terminology right, I'm not used talking about this in English, my vocabulary is geared towards regular cooking English).

Date: 2023-09-09 07:51 pm (UTC)Yeah I'm 80% sure it's how the 'right rice' was made that's the issue because I've done store bought chickpea pasta before without issue and I do eat falafel and chickpeas all the damn time (including today at an Egyptian food truck)
You did fine. I understood exactly what you meant. Certainly better if I tried it the other way round (seriously, last weekend standing in Spring Grove cemetery looking at the head stones going HOW is this pronounced even? Ohio is very German influenced, both Columbus and Cincinnati (and Pittsburgh where I grew up) have German villages. I had patients in Columbus's German village who spoke no English, or maybe did and forgot it as they aged. My great grandmother did that as she hit her 90s and reverted to Italian

Date: 2023-09-09 12:31 pm (UTC)I've finally developed a taste for greek yogurt at my brother's house since that is all they bought. It's probably better for me than the regular. :-D

Date: 2023-09-09 07:40 pm (UTC)It allows me to control the sugar content better as it has far less sugar and then I toss in fruit (and splenda but you could do stevia, monk fruit etc)
