Again. I decided to try out a haunted cemetery in Ironton and I know I have to go down 93 to get there (It's on the OH/KY border) so I pass on my GPS's suggestion to hit Vega road because I want to get more than 5 feet from my house before I go on the dirt roads. I know I can hit the next town and jump on 93 there BUT I don't remember how as it's been 15 years since I've done that.

My GPS didn't remember either and starts taking me down one narrow assed dirt road after the other. I have NO idea where I am but I know I'm not going in the right direction. I AM going in circles at one point I passed the same cow three times. It said go to CH&D road and I KNOW that goes to 93 but it can't get me there. After one jaunt on a dirt road that was 10 miles long and having been at this 45 minutes I say next paved road I get on, I'm pulling over and punching in go home. At one point I have to stop on the road so a cat and three chickens could fight it out.

I finally get on a county road but it's flooded so I can't pull over. And then I see it. Hallelujah! 93! I jump on and get there in like 30 minutes (which is about all it should have taken as this is like 35 miles from here b ut I've never been there).

Thanks to find a grave I get to find all the ones I wanted to. Funny thing is the book that I got at the Frogman Festival had the name of the cemetery wrong (so take the next details with a grain of salt).

The first one is Osa's grave. Her husband beat up his pregnant wife, knocked her down the stairs and she and the fetus died. In a fit of remorse (eyeroll) he bought this memorial and the legend is the discolored cheek was where he hit her and it can't be sand blasted away (it was ruled and accident I believe)

Someone has put an extra gothic touch on this with a solar paneled candelabra

depicted here with a slightly pregnant belly

her slapped cheek

no ghost story, I just liked the name

The ghost of a man is seen, once so realistically that someone shot at him (I looked but didn't see the supposed bullet holes) What happened was this massive cross fell and crushed a worker who was helping to erect it

no ghosts, just cool

sad baby grave, there was another one, a modern one that has the entirety of the poem Little Boy Blue on it that is heartbreaking

I looked around trying to see what scripture someone had carved into stone only to find it was a surname. What Puritanical nonsense is this?

I'm wondering if Woodland wasn't multiple cemeteries all grown together because there was one section that had a private small church feel to it vs the rest (not pictured) of the cemetery and then there's this picture. If you look close you can see it has Hebrew on the arch, there's a tiny Jewish section, something not usually seen swallowed up in a Christian burial site

The Lowry mausoleum. His ghost, stumpy as it is, is seen. When his wife died, he bought an expensive casket but then complained it had imperfections and he wasn't paying for it so she was buried in an off the floor model, stiffing the funeral director. When he died, he was given to the same home and that mortician had to gut him out and break his legs to fit him in the unused fancy casket

She is seen dancing ballet throughout the graveyard. Her story is sad too. Her life wasn't but her death...she was buried with valuables including a brooch from the Tsar (she was a talented ballerina) Grave robbers broke her glass topped casket, stole the brooch, broke off her fingers to get the rings etc and someone shot up her plaques. The ones in the picture mysteriously reappeared in 2021.

Helen Gorey is the mother of Edward Gorey and his ashes (part of them) are here with her. I didn't move the fake spider. I adore his The Gashlycrumb Tinies and told him so

I thought she was pretty. It reads Spes in deo (hope in god)

Afterward I went somewhere students and people at Rathacon told me to try Superhero Creamery which is an ice cream + Froyo+ comic book store + ceramic create space. It was cool. I went with the 1960s era Batman ice cream, the BanaNaNaNa. (banana cream pie) yum. It's in Ashland KY so yes I crossed the river. Never been in Ashland before.

I went back across to Ironton to Melini's an Italian restaurant and it actually had Saltinboca alla Romana and I was excited (the waitress less so she couldn't spell it or pronounce it) I had the chicken version (as I don't eat veal) It was more of a deconstructed version but tasty.

Coming home the GPS almost behaved until I got to Oak HIll (which I know how to get home from) when it short cutted me onto a dead end dirt road and finally over to the Vega road I didn't want to go on in the beginning. On the way home I had to stop in the middle of the road because some chickens were mixing it up with a goat.

Really? WTF chickens?

And I was super excited to find Trilogy of Terror on Svengoolie and laughed because he said no one remembers the first two stories in the trilogy (he wasn't wrong). LOVED the third one when I was a kid. I hid in the hall and watched since these were made for tv movies in 1975

Love the photos. Graveyards can be so interesting. I love all the local history you can learn.

The comic bookstore/Ice cream shop sounds awesome.

Oh man I miss Svengoolie! It's the only thing I miss about having cable. I haven't been able to watch him in years. 😫 I still subscribe to his newsletter and my family tells me about what aired.
